but dark souls and antichamber aren't hard
It is if you try and do it on your first playthrough with restrictions. No shield, no armor and you are already set. There are many more things to make your journey even more fun. No rings, melee only, no healing, etc.

OH BABY

rise of nations is really hard on the hardest difficulty

rise of nations is really hard on the hardest difficulty

Unless you play as Russia.

Pretty much, the only masochistic games that are strategy that haven't been listed would have to be:

Total Annihilation
Supreme Commander: FA (X AI); I've only had one friend beat the X AI, forget that AI, forget it forever.
Darwinia/Multiwinia

roguelikes in general fit in the "soul-crushing" category

apart from what's already been listed:
don't starve
spelunky
risk of rain

ArmA 2 and 3 are pretty hard,  it they're really only fun with friends. If you ever wanted a game that makes you feel completely incompetent this is it.

super meat boy
ftl faster than light (especially with the captains edition and randtrel/randomized flagship mods)
don't starve is pretty hard I guess
super hexagon

risk of rain's pretty hard, one of my favorite games too. LOTS of replayability

Bioshock infinite 1999 mode

This, all my this, you have no idea how loving hard this mod is.

such is life in the zone
