Punch Brothers - JulepI'm sorry that there is no way to convey the experience that is watching this live from across the internet.
I didn't get this song when I first heard it, but what it gives me now is so much.
It's the idea of aging and dying with grace and dignity, and the appreciation of the series of moments that gets you there. That there is no greater joy than just sitting with the person that you've chosen to live your life with and watching as time passes. Understanding that your time on Earth is limited, but that the limitation is what makes it perfect. A story isn't a story without an ending. The greatest gift one can ever be given is a "happily ever after" with someone who knows you just as you know them, and watching as your mark upon the world grows so big that it barely remembers you. Knowing that your work is done.
The song itself never fails to put my mind in that place. It's shaped by one of the greatest groups of musicians ever to be. Each of them not only thoroughly understands their instrument, but each-other. Their voices merge, their instrumental parts complement clearly and clemently. The piece swells and fades delicately. Themes repeat, modulate, harmonize, and pass.
I don't believe I've heard a better musical performance since I heard this. I'm not sure I ever will.
Anyhow, I guess you guys are more intent on memes, but this is important to me. I hope somebody likes it.
