Author Topic: Steam is "deprecating" MAC OS X 10.6 in November  (Read 3008 times)

Nice to have someone who actually knows what they're talking about for once.

Oh boy, people stuck using Macs getting mad that Macs are stuffty.

Yeah man.

MacOS 10.6.8 represents 0.06% of the steam user base as of September 2015

SO SALTY MAN.

What?

Sorry, I was pointing Skip to your quote. I wasn't talking about you.

O

Well carry on good sir

nice one steam
this is exactly why i don't like apple
another company forcing you to have the latest and greatest
10.6 came out in 2009, any recent mac should still be able to upgrade to a later os x version

if yours is older than 2009 you probably arent playing many games so this doesnt effect you, because the steam client isnt gonna suddenly stop working. youll still be able to talk to people through it

got a question, can my ibook g3 clamshell ( with a swapped motherboard that has a core 2 duo cpu ) get OS X 10.6 snow leopard without any issues? or should i stick with tiger.... though compatibility is quite a problem on tiger

Guys, You dont expect to run windows 10 on your 2005 piece of stuff. This apple hate might seem "reasonable" and that all started back when they made one dramatic change; When they went from IBM power PC to Intel x86. That started this stuff fling fest that continues today. OSX updates are normally always free anymore, unless your hardware cant run it. To keep their OS as light as possible, they use exclusive instruction sets and modify their kernel for newer architectures. It simply isnt the same as windows, It is comparing a golden delicious apple to a fuji apple, it is possible... but not realistic. Windows discontinued support for windows XP and when they did that they disowned it entirely, any apps that were once usable with XP no matter what it was if it was made by windows are now not downloadable anymore, to include service packs and essential upgrades. Dont criticize some other OS because you want to cling onto your own stuff and fanboy about it. They are different get the forget over it.

They are not just an OS manufacturer, they are also a hardware manufacturer. Meaning they also have that side to struggle with, and they are going to do whatever makes money while keeping customers.
If I had a 2005 computer I wouldn't expect it to run Windows 10. However, Steam isn't depreciating support for any version of Windows because everything still works for any relevant version when they update it for Windows. I could be running Steam on XP on some 2005 computer, the same Steam that someone's running on Win 10 on some new $2000 computer. And even let's say, a piece of software doesn't work on a newer version of Windows. It doesn't need to be updated to do so on it's current or even a new branch, because Windows has compatibility modes. It seems like Apple is the only thing that frequently breaks compatibility with programs with updates to their OSs.

Now, I'm not saying Windows isn't stuff, or that it's better than Mac. I wish software developers would support Mac and Linux more. Especially with all the stuff going on with Windows 10. But this is definitely not Steam's fault that they cannot afford to update for multiple Mac branches because of compatibility.

if its got an intel cpu as you mentioned and a minimum of like, 2gb ram. 10.6 should work fine

my old mbp 2007/8 ran on 10.6.8 without an issue

I hope you realize that a lot of carriers have yearly plans that prevent you from buying new devices without paying full price. And that Apple introduces new products on a yearly basis because people buy the devices at different intervals. I.e. AT&T has a 2 year program and if I had an iPhone 5s and wanted to upgrade, I'd have to wait till the 6s. A new product is available to me to upgrade if I so chose. I don't have to wait for the new version to come out after my time limit. No one is asking you to buy their new product. Its there because some people do have money.
None of this changes the fact that they specifically forced apps to not support ios4 because they wanted to force people to buy more of their stuff, which is still a richardish thing to do in every possible regard. There is literally no upside to it whatsoever for the consumer OR developers, it doesn't make code more organized, it doesn't make things easier to develop, it doesn't save people money, etc etc etc.

I don't know about you guys, but the reason I am so vocally against apple is because they're such goddamn cheapskates and will do literally anything to force their customers to pay more money than what they should be paying, not that other companies don't do this, but apple does it five times over. Liking/enjoying an OS is SUBJECTIVE. Prices are OBJECTIVE. There are hundreds of examples of this and I could spend all day. But seriously, this deprecation is not a big deal at all. Chances are it'll still work just fine, and for the 0.06% of people who actually have it, when it stops working, they'll just have to deal. Keeping support for so many different types of OS's slows down development significantly, and we all know that we want Valve to put out things sooner...
