Author Topic: Stylized or Realistic Looking Games?  (Read 2470 times)

Here's a topic I've been curious to discuss about, it's about the look of modern games, I know a lot of people prefers realistic as possible games with amazing renders, resolutions and other things, but honestly I've always prefered games that had a more stylized style, here's an example, I downloaded this game for my phone today called Horizon Chase and this is how it looks like.

It's a tribute to early 90s racing games, but still it looks really nice, bright and colorful, and it runs perfectly on my Moto G, and I love that, I love the fact that stylized games ages well with time compared to realistic looking games and it doesn't required a very powerful machine or device to run it at a smooth framerate, and that's why I prefer an art style like that, and I'm curious to know you guys opinions, realistic or stylized? Of course I like realistic looking games as well and the graphics much depends on which game specifically.

I like both kinds honestly but I prefer games with more realistic mechanics instead of people shooting bazookas in their feet and surviving and making a car fly hundreds of meters using nitro

making a car fly hundreds of meters using nitro
you can do that just driving into a wall

both is great

Stylized, whether it's high-detail or not doesn't matter. I just don't like 'realistic'-looking graphics.

Borderlands 2 Is a nice example of a "mix" between these two. it's great

It depends. If a dev can really push the limits of what we now deem to be realistic, they should by all means go for it. However if they're going to strive for realism and do it badly, I would much prefer stylized graphics.

If they can do it right; I prefer both.

graphics really don't mean much to me unless it's under certain circumstances

for example, fallout 3
they were trying to present, um, a "realistic" game, so the whole amorphous blobs that they called faces were really off-putting.

comparing that to something like minecraft doesn't really work, because minecraft isn't trying to present something realistically.

sometimes, i'll just like a game for its gameplay and mechanics despite its graphics. that's what it's really all about anyway

anyway i like both as long as it's done right in their own way, and i think that's pretty much the same sentiment everyone here shares lol

that said, if i had to choose, stylized all the way because it gives you more room to work with

As long as the game background didn't look as 2d as cardboard. Then I guess I really wouldn't mind if it went either way.

I perfer stylized games that rely more so on the art design and such rather than graphical power, but I like both kinds. Stylized games just age so much better graphically and look more appealing in my opinion. For example there's a racing game called auto modellista albeit it's an alright game it has superb visuals with great texture work that disguises how low poly everything also with the use of clever lighting effects all while the game running at a clean stable 60 fps.

Stylized like Windwaker HD :^))

cell shading + thick outlines is my favorite form of stylized vidya

what the forget, is horizon chase out for android?

anyway

ya what he said, but the game's gotta have good artistic direction regardless.
