Author Topic: Being pushed to go on disability.  (Read 1438 times)

I felt like sharing this because it's a pretty controversial topic (at least in class it was, not sure here) and I'm wondering what you guys think.

For some back story:
A month after I turned 18 one of my spinal disks ruptured and is deteriorating. It's been over a year and it's still not fixed. Doctors them self said that it can't be fixed, all they can do is relieve the nerve pressure to allow me to walk halfway normal and without excruciating pain. My range of movement and lifting capacity can't be restored, along with that I'll still have back pain and require constant chiropractics to keep my spine from bending back out of shape. I'm unable to stand for more than a few minutes and I require a cane when I leave the house. A single fall can put me in the hospital and cause a lot of damage. I can no longer touch my toes while standing nor am I suppose to lift more than 50 pounds, I can but I'm not suppose to.

With all this in mind I've been urged by my mother and her boyfriend to try for disability since I won't be able to work many jobs. I never was too fond of the idea myself but coming to terms with the fact that this actually has disabled me it may just be an option. I'm unsure of what I want to do but I don't have too many options.
What do you guys think?

Bro, why wouldn't you do it? Get free money like the rest of this country.

go for it, it'll help support you financially if you can't get any good jobs because of said disability.

Well it sounds like you have a legitimate cause for disability rather than you ate too many big macs and can no longer fit through your front door.

That's what I was told, it just feels wrong

There's always desk jobs
Tried, they all ask for requirements I can't meet. (3-6 months work history, X degree in Y, etc etc) Right now the only actual 'job' I'd be good for is a walmart greeter/security guard. All the guard does is sit down and tell the front if someone is stealing something. Source: A walmart security guard

It would help a ton, right now we're kept afloat off of my grandpas and uncles disability. We have no real income because the people I live with are either disabled or preoccupied.

This made me laugh, thanks. It definitely is a legitimate reason to get it, main thing that stops me is mainly my own self-pride of not wanting to live that way. That and the fact I'd have to go through a ton of work to get it, which includes more doctor visits. I should get started on it asap if I really do want it. I'm just not sure of it

In your case dude i'd just do disability. You have every reason to have it and can rest easy that you're not just playing the system.

Money is never free.

Become a security guard AFTER black friday, trust me, you DON'T want to deal with that crap.

Obamacare is a free health care system, and i know a lot of people have done this.  Applying for something like that is not wrong, you need help and it is offered to you.  Also, it isn't free money.

I looked into it, my injury would basically instantly get me disability without a doubt. My injury is listed under the 'severe' section. Those are usually accepted quickly.
I figure I'll apply for it eventually. The extra money will help.

I'm sorry about that OP.  Never heard that before, but glad you're taking steps to make light of it.

I appreciate your thanks and the way I see it is there is a silver lining to every cloud. Things may look gloomy on the surface but there is always a light behind it to help make up for it/make things better.

Everyone asks for work history, for most jobs all it does is reduce the candidate pool because people go "oh I can't do that" when in reality you can still get the job if you're the best candidate. Having work history will help, but everyone has to start somewhere.

"Desk job" could even be more broad than I originally meant; like some places allow cashiers to sit, especially if you have a disability; as long as the register can reasonably fit a chair without interfering with working, they're required under ADA to make reasonable accommodations.

To be clear, this is a legitimate case for disability, so don't think I'm arguing against it.  It's just that disability doesn't really "pay" a whole lot, and if you can get better options, you should go for them

That's awful, really sorry to hear this. It may not feel right, but you simply don't have as many options as other people and that isn't fair to you. You still definitely can find work, though. Good luck.
