Author Topic: Ideas for a DayZ-esque server?  (Read 1438 times)

Once I've finished my first project that I'm almost done packaging into a gamemode, I want to move on to a more apocalyptic style server.
What I do know and can confirm for definite is that it's going to take place on a large, open-world map, will be during the winter, and will feature gameplay similar to DayZ without the zombies. The problem is that.. what is the gameplay going to be around?

Two ideas I currently have are:
Player VS Player emphasis
  • Weaponry is to be used against other players.
  • Everything is difficult to find.
  • Bodies can be looted, encouraging PVP.
  • 'Rare' to 'common' items can be found, encouraging PVP against stronger players.
Players working together
  • Weaponry is very discourged to be used against other players. Maybe for hunting.
  • PROBABLY going to make it more of a 'survival with other players' gamemode instead of a 'survival against players' gamemode.
  • ROUTE TWO (will not combine above and below ideas)
  • Quest system implemented, make it more of an RPG.
  • ( dunno how I would give incentive to get better items (what would better items be used for?) )

Bottom line is: What would you enjoy seeing in an open-world, winter, forest, survival game, that focuses on the management of food, possibly heat, and maybe even the protection of yourself against other players ( if i should include it at all? )

Perhpas an actual hunting system between players and animal AI would be nice.

So basically a survival game, like ARK without the dinos or DayZ without the zombies.

Is there a crafting system? And a building system?

I already tried this on my server if people were interested. I got bored though. The lack of mods for eating and drinking and sleeping killed it.

I've modified things before to make better eating/drinking mods that actually work with items, instead of bricks or something.

I like the brown townogy if DayZ because I like the tension players get when confronted by others, however, if I dont make PVP an important thing, this may not exist for the server (thus killing the dayz-like feeling)

add random events, like every now and then like lets say, when its raining you start getting cold, if you get too cold you start feeling sick, when you start feeling sick you cant do much actions and are slower, the only way to revive is with either medicine or staying out of the rain, add weapons that have tactical advantages, lets say, if a player acquires a pistol with low health on it, you cant hurt as much, you can craft or repair to make the gun get better, add the ability to add attachments, make a way for players to have transmissions, like lets say, a global transmission, a local transmission and a private transmission. just some ideas y'know

If Crafting is going to be a thing, then add a scraping system. Where you can get wooden abandoned items like a crate and scrap them into wood that can be used to make barricades that can be used for base building. Or maybe for crafted weapons.
 And for food, add a farming system. With the crafted weapons thing, you can make a makeshift hoe to then plant seeds and stuff.

Both these ideas sound horrible, too complicated and who wants to spend effort on a loving farm when the next day some chuckleforgets snipe you on the field and thats the end of it.

It's not too complicated at all, and also the second part is literally DayZ.

All he needs to do is create a farming system, a crafting system a repair system. Something to spawn parts to repair to guns that he will have to code to break. Then make an illness system (and possibly base it off a heatmod or make one), then create some barricade items to block players and figure out a way to spawn them from parts in your inventory.
