Spore
old but gold and pretty much as "large-scale sandbox" you can really get

i'm assuming a 4x RTS is not what you're looking for (games like Civilization, Victoria II, Endless Legend, etc.)

there's From Dust or Reus (although the latter isn't really "massive"). uhh, there is the X series (specifically X3). it's a space sim sandbox that actually deals with a lot of strategy such as trade and commerce and stuff, not entirely sure it's what you want though-- and i haven't really played too much because i haven't had the time to actually sit down and learn it.

you could always richard around in universe sandbox 1 or 2. the first kept me entertained for a few hours at a time

, Victoria II,
vicky is grand strategy, not  4x
I would also recommend us2. messing with climate is fun

richarding around is exactly what i want to do
from dust and reus also look cool so I'll look into those
thank you for your help

as a legitimate recommendation, I'd say Shores of Hazeron. It's still not easy on the eyes, but it's come a long way and is really fun to play. It's definitely worth investing in if you're up for some empire management and spaceship designing

AirMech?
you're technically not a person, you're just a robot that kills everything in sight
(unless you take pilots seriously)

ah, my bad

richarding around is exactly what i want to do
it's always fun to smash planets and stars together

The Powder Toy.

very good game if you have a good processor, fun to watch explosive reactions in 50-60 fps but once it dips, things get too slow

yes, i've been playing with the powder toy for a couple years now
good fun
