Totally lacking in any thought though. Practically just giving a gift for the sake of giving.

Make her a hand made card and put some cash in it

Giving money is a gift. Throughout all of my years, I've never given anyone a physical gift. I just do money because how am I suppose to know what someone else wants?

by asking them

by asking them

I'm not asking someone what they want as a present. Who does that? It's obnoxious when others expect another individual to get them a specific gift. They should be appreciative about getting a gift in the first place. I think it's very rude for someone to tell me what kind of gift they want, in my opinion.

Beyond the assertion that every gift should be a surprise, a gift that has care and thought put into it while also being a surprise is an A+ gift but it's surprisingly hard to buy gifts for some people.

Rather than just giving them cash, ask them what they would like. If they say "I don't know", then ask them the same question only more specific, like "What would you really like right now?" or something along those lines

Also OP like I said earlier if you really don't know what to get her, get her a yankee candle. I'm completely loving serious, moms love yankee candles

Eh, with money they can always just buy whatever they want. Saves me time.

People like more personalized gifts. It makes them feel like you actually care about them since you put the time into figuring out what they would like.

i'm making my aunt a recipe jar, where you fill up the jar with the dry ingredients (flour, chocolate chips, sugar, etc) and put a recipe card on the front of the jar. so basically it's just free cookies except add water/oil and bake
they look like this
