That's actually not true at all. In a small population each individual node has much more weight. For example, in a population of 10, you can't look at 3, see that one is a guy and two are girls, and assume that 2/3 of the population are girls, even though you took a 33% sample. However, in a population of 1,000,000 if you find that in a sample of 333,333 that 2/3 are girls and 1/3 are guys, you can much more accurately assume that 2/3 of the total population are girls and 1/3 are guys.

Honestly I can't name a situation where using a smaller sample is more effective, sure I bet you can go google it and give me 100 examples but accuracy comes with larger numbers.

The principle applies even better with more factors. If you pick 3 out of 10 and ask them their favorite color, and two say green and one says red, you can't assume that 2/3 of the population likes green and 1/3 likes red. However, if you pick 333,333 out of 1,000,000 and ask them their favorite color, you can get an accurate representation of what colors that group of people like.

Honestly from experience, most of the drug users who I have met and spoken to are often a lot more insightful than non drug users, so you'd be lucky to end up like them.
