is there a way someone could script a program that turned maps into static shapes that could work like the bedroom static shape

I've thought of this before, like an adapter, but the guy that made static maps (can't quite remember who) says that that'd be either impossible or very near to it. It'd be easier to just make the maps by hand than to make an adapter.

The thing with bricks is that you can only save what you see.

With infinite terrain you still have to physically go to every corners of the map just to make sure they all ghost properly just so you can save.
You don't have to save through the normal system.
PTG saves everything for you when using infinite terrain.
As long as you keep the exact same settings, you will load everything back after restarting your server.
No need to ghost anything.

Seems like everything they say is impossible correlates with "I'm too lazy to even try" these days. Seriously, if you haven't tried it, you might want to. Even if the outcome is buggy and unplayable, at least you know it can be done. Work of what you can do, and what you can't.

I don't see why it would be impossible. However these maps would be just as / more ugly than the old ones.

A static shape the size of the slopes, I'd imagine, would probably suffer some gross lighting and rendering issues, given the Torque engine...

what about recreating slopes with modter bricks, so you can actually ski down them

Personally, I don't know about y'all, but I played Blockland because of the maps.

A lot of people's strong argument is that they are too lazy and they could just load up a map or terrain no problem.

Heaven forbid a building game wants to be a game about building.

A lot of people I've seen were just jump jetting around the bedroom map and just using it as a 3D chat room.

I play the game more than half for the chat, and I know tons of other people who do too. Hell, there are literally servers dedicated to having conversations with people.

Welp, here's my two cents on terrain and such:

I used custom maps a lot, usually when I wanted to invoke a sense of scale and exploration. Have you ever tried to assemble a detailed city map that spans further than the average player's render distance or a massive sloped arena for long range dogfighting or vehicular combat using modter or the like? Its one helluva task, even more so if you want it to look good or naturalish.

The ultimate issue with removing maps is that most players do not have the technical skill or patience to assemble a masterpiece of general use terrain. And then the ones that do, do not actually share their talents at all. Upon scanning through the server lists on the Blockland website, I see a lot of private servers with these really awesome terrains that I would absolutely love to implement, but can't get my hands on because they're locked behind a password. Then they literally vanish into the abyss, never to be seen or heard from again.

Feel like the next task would be to make build sharing more important. Then provide some half decent terrain generation code that isn't super spam junction and can make some interesting shapes; or something to just make building large builds easier than one brick at a time.

Or something idk.

Well said. The thing I liked about maps was the fact that they went as far as the eye could see, and then some. Maps were easy to make, and TC wasn't very hard to learn either. It was fun just adventuring the open world, building a lil hut way out from society and "living" there with only your friends knowing how to find you. The map secrets were cool. Skiing was smoother. Vehicles had decent collision

However, the main issue with maps was dynamic lighting and load times. Lets not forget how after you went out so far you could fall under the map. Personally, I prefer having a functional day-cycle with proper lighting and a changeable environment over maps. Shaders are nice, even though they require a newer/better video card. Yes building takes more time and sucks when you have a big project, and using a ton of bricks solely on terrain really eats at your system.

All in all though, I think Blockland has improved significantly since maps.

I prefer maps that don't exactly last forever anyways. I had to make an invisible box to prevent people leaving terrain maps.

so the conclusion of this discussion seems to have been the same compared to every other one

we all keep our own opinions and depending on them, acknowledge that the change to shaders has had some positive effects, if not a lot.

some really good posts happened in this thread though, so maybe this should be used as a reference for how to have a civil discussion about this topic, when ignoring the actual possibility of maps being reinstated.

If you guys want maps back you could always give badspot an investment opportunity for Blockland 2 on a modern engine.
