Author Topic: Why do TV shows and Videogames allow product placement?  (Read 572 times)

What I want to know is why do TV shows or games allow obvious product placement? Does it even work? So say for example you're watching TV and the guy on TV says "I can't start my morning without a glass of pepsi!" What kind of audience sitting on the couch is going to get up and rush to go buy a pepsi? I've seen shows and games get dumbed down in quality and it looks incredibly cheesy.

Now I know the main reason, money. However they are only making a 1 time payment or smaller multiple payments. Not only that obvious product placement has been known to turn viewers away from the tv show, movie or game.

Wouldn't it make more sense for these games or tv shows or movies to make their own fake brands? Not only does it improve their image because it shows they don't sell out but they can then resell replica products based on their fake brand and make a full profit. Worked for Nuka Cola, Brawndo energy drink, duff beer, alamo beer, Bonk! Atomic Punch, sprunk, clucken bell, burgershot, etc. All of these fictional products have proven that they can make fake brands and still make money off them from die hard fans without alienating their fan base with corporate selling out.

(Don't take his advice. You'll die of dehydration if you bring mountain dew on an uncharted island)

You are probably the only person I know of to ever complaij about something as weird as this.

It's not so much of a complaint. I'm just curious because in theory they could technically make a higher profit by selling their fake brand replicas.

Bethesda is making a stuff ton of money off the "Vault-Tec" fake brand.

I like the use of product placement in Wayne's World.

If you're going to sell out you might as well make fun of your sponsor in the process lol. Aqua Teen Hunger Force does this.

Money

But they have a higher opportunity to make money off their fake brands. They can claim royalties on that stuff all the way until the trademark ends.

The money they get off corporate selling out is limited and surely won't last as long as a fake brand trademark.

Back To The Future didn't even make money off the pepsi product placements. They were just given free supply of pepsi for the cast and crew. Pepsi made all the money from the Pepsi stuff and they sold those pepsi replica bottles for like 20 dollars each in october.

I guarantee you they make far more money from product placement than from selling merchandise

Some of them don't get any money from it. They just get like free meals or whatever.
