Author Topic: Should "handicapped" (the r word) be removed from the dictionary?  (Read 3868 times)

never change, forums

might as well remove all offensive words while we're at it

"It offends people!"

A true handicap doesn't know what the word handicap even means. I've seen anti-handicap campaigns with someone who has downsyndrome telling others that the word handicap is bad. It's clearly obvious these people with downsyndrome were manipulated to say something they don't even understand.

what is and is not considered offensive is a subjective topic, dictionaries are objective

You can change the definition from the dictionary but you can't get it removed.

I think you're severely overestimating the effects of down syndrome, lol

I think you're severely overestimating the effects of down syndrome, lol

I've seen a 30 year old incredibly over weight man with down syndrome who picked up his grandmother and threw her against the house because he heard a loud noise.

it's a goddamn dictionary you don't remove words because you don't like them

Well, it's not just an offense, it is also a word used to describe mentally challenged/limited/whatever people. Just because it can be used as an insult does not mean it must not be a word at all.
This is how i see it

I once saw this video where this kid tried to get it removed from the dictionary but marriam-webster said it can't get rid of words.  I think it was my first cringe video.

It then showed a bunch of kids saying "i promise" even kids with down-syndrome but i jardly doubt they even knew what they were saying i promise to lol.

I want to see this video, lol.

It's like those people who want to ban the word bossy.

Ummm this isnt the video but

I don't understand the big deal.

Normally when someone calls someone a cigarette or gay they aren't making fun of someone's loveuality they are just calling them "annoying." Same way people call someone a handicap they find them "annoying."

I had to explain this to someone who thought the term cigarette is an insult to gay people. I had to explain to him people use the term cigarette as an annoying person.

"handicapped" and "handicap" are important scientific terms. Out of the 8 total definitions, 1 slang definition is used as an insult.

I really despise these people who go around lashing out at people's word choices. transmission. handicap. monday. If these words instantly provoke you outside of any hateful or demeaning context, you're the one with the problem.

I see you haven't been in the UK.

This is the video i think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkdtEOrrkPs
"Intellectual disability"

I'm going to start using "disablo" as an insult from now on so that they eventually have to change that convoluted term.
