no offense to any women in the industry, I really think we need more females, but the problem I feel with "getting girls into code" is that we're literally using
other stereotypes to do it with
like we're trying to get women into code by going "look at these dresses light up" or by making everything nice, pink and "girly"
seriously, don't get me wrong, even as a gay guy I feel like there should be more women in code, but the way people are introducing it really bugs me - breaking stereotypes with stereotypes doesn't seem very productive
also as said a while back, knowing scratch or whatever doesn't really make you a programmer, so why companies think that you can go "omg i'm a programmer" when all you know is scratch blows my mind
when I was 11, I didn't even know scratch existed, my dad just gave me a couple textbooks and I'm like "cool" so I learned it myself - code academy and "code.org" weren't around
also, just saw McJob's quote, didn't even see the quote he quoted
“Our children — including our girls — need the opportunity to learn computer science.”
The first quote I see immediately pisses me off.
we need to stop saying opportunity and more of removal of social stigma/encouragement to learn computer science; most girls don't care or think that you're a total dork if you know how to program
because I'm pretty certain every girl has the opportunity (in the first world) to program, it's just that they don't want to (pretty average imo of most people) or everyone around them is like "people who do computers are creepy men"
