Author Topic: Sheepocalypse just drove (and will drive tomorrow)  (Read 899 times)

So my school is ass and starts Driver's Ed the second semester. My teacher said I'll be driving tomorrow. I was never taught how to operate a vehicle, just traffic laws and that sort of stuff. My parents decide they want to take me driving today so I did and it was cool
I only drove about 2 miles, but tomorrow I'm supposed to drive 20 and I'm nervous

So what do I need to look for (dont make a stuffty joke) when driving 20 miles? I dont want to die

I just found an image of you in tomorrow's newspaper.

20 miles isn't so bad

black spots on the road mean a bump is coming up so don't get surprised
follow the speed limit or the flow of traffic and make sure to take spots where people can flow around you, keeping as far a distance from other nearby cars as possible
use your forgetin turn signal in advance of a lane shift so people have the chance to let you merge
know what lane you want to be in in advance
if someone is directly in front of you and there's nobody behind you it's ok to slow down to get a better view around them + increase the distance you have to brake if they suddenly stop
if you can see the light in front of you is red or yellow way in advance you can lean off the pedal and just coast. what you want to do is deliberately wait out the light without actually stopping moving to save gas and mometum
if someone takes a left turn on a yellow light don't follow them immediately because it might not actually be safe for you to go as well
if you're trapped in an intersection during a yellow light left turn it's totally within your right to just complete the turn (and it's probably less safe if you just sit there obstructing traffic) but it's still a hairy situation so be on your toes

don't park next to a 30 year old car and put a dent in it >:(

also be a defensive driver. believe everyone else on the road has no idea what they're doing. half the time you're right. unless you can't turn right on red. then you have to wait.

Just remember to stay calm. Don't freak out when you get into the car because everything will be okay. Just focus on driving and being smooth, so don't be too hard on the breaks of have a lead.

Also:
Floor it

okay, you need to be looking pretty much everywhere while you drive

the most important things are:
- to know what signs mean, which i assume you'd know from driver's ed
- to watch for drivers around you
- if you're doubtful at all about a left turn, DON'T DO IT, wait until it's safe
- keep any distractions far away from your reach. don't look at your girlfriend's text she sent you, don't be changing the cd in the stereo, don't do any of that
- and of course, wear your seatbelt for the whole trip

in your instance, since there's probably an instructor in the seat with you, you'll need to stay calm and not worry about things, and to not let them make you panic
are you going on the highway at all? or somewhere where there's major traffic? for those you'll need to be extra careful, since you're going faster there's a larger risk in both a deadly accident or an accident in the first place (driver error is a highest cause of accidents, though), and that in bad traffic there will be people who suddenly brake. and on the highways, don't be one of those idiots that drive over the "gore" part of an exit. if you tried to exit there but you couldn't get in the lane, wait until the next exit to get off the highway

if your instructor has you try parallel parking, it isn't quite as difficult as those movies and stuff exaggerate it to be, you just need to know how you do it

i'm not exactly sure what the laws in your state are, so if there' something i'm missing feel free to tell me

don't forget up and you'll be fine

Driving's easy, the second time I ever went driving, I was on the freeway. Also had an hour-long drive before, it wasn't fun. :(

Be an agressive starfish on the road. Everyone out there wants to kill you. Passing other cars on the road is OK as long as there's no car comming towards you and the division line is striped-white. Don't cross double-yellow lines but you can if your side is striped-white and the other is a continuous yellow line.
