Author Topic: Nvidia GTX 980 or 970  (Read 5327 times)

I really doubt it does
oh really?

lets see

GTA V running 30 - 40 FPS on high with my 6350, then 40 - 50 on the pentium placeholder, and finally 60 FPS cap on my i5

beamng went from 20 - 30 fps on the 6350, to 30 - 35 on the pentium, then again, 60 fps cap on the i5

most games had similar results

you dont know what you're talking about, take it from someone whos actually done it, and been there

So since I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU to a 4690k, do I go with the 970 or the 980?

r9 390 masterrace
you mean worse performance by every game because developers purposefully bias towards nvidia race?

R9 390 still, on average, outperforms the GTX 970 in new games. DX12 benchmarks show it outperforming GTX 980 and coming close to 980 Ti

in what "new games"?

the only new games i see so far where the 390 is doing better is witcher 3 and battlefront, and even then the difference is around 5 fps on average

heres a "new" game where exactly what i talked about is happening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15wOp7_dD8E

so in the end would you rather have the big card that sometimes cant be used properly or the smaller card that has little difference and is used properly?

If you're playing games at 1080p or 1440p get a 970.
If you have a 4k monitor get a 980.

The 970 gets around 90 FPS at 1080p in GTA V and around 60 FPS at 1440p for me.

fallout 4 is an exception.

they tested 14 games. at resolutions 1080p and above, on average, the R9 390 maintains clear superiority with modern drivers.
images below are cumulative results combining all tested games.

plus, you are getting: 8GB of VRAM (futureproof), proper async shaders (benefit in VR, DX12), full DX12 support (Maxwell cards are a bit weird in that regard)

so pretty much, unless you are brown town about power consumption/heat output, get the R9 390

As a 970 - 4690k owner, if you're solely playing on a 1080p monitor there is no reason to get a 980.

The 23.5GB-.5GB VRAM issue isn't a problem until you start major supersampling or just play at 4k, which is something I don't do.
It'll save you a good handful spondulies to just go with the 970. It's very powerful for 1080 gaming. I can easily run anything without worry and I'm not even into the overclocking scene.

I have a GeForce GT 625. How big of a step up would a 970 or 980 be for me?

I average 90 FPS in LoL with low graphics
A step higher than Snoop Dogg on 4/20.

Power:price ratio points to 970 or jump to 980ti.
980 is an odd gap now.

Why does that chart show 970 sli as having 8g?
Sli dosnt work like that
