Author Topic: NETGEAR Adapter Dilemma (A6200) Fixed?  (Read 2501 times)

I use a Netgear A6200 Adapter to connect to my desktop to my WiFi.

Usually it works fine and has no issues. However, as of recently, it has been randomly disconnecting from the internet for no apparent reason; disallowing me to do many basic functions. As I'm typing this, I've already lost connection twice.

EDIT: Let me clarify that I'm not completely losing connection, I just can't connect to anything and steam will go offline. It usually lasts about 30 - 40 seconds and happens every 4 - 5 minutes.

Here's what I've tried to do to fix the issue:

According to NETGEAR, I needed to do this:

But still nothing has changed.

According to a user on the NETGEAR forum, it's an issue with Win10. I don't understand this since I've had Windows 10 for multiple months now and have never had this issue.

What I've tried and hasn't worked:

1. Update the adapter's drivers (Windows says they are up to date)

2. Reset router / computer

3. Disable minimal power consumption.

Other options I can think of:

1. Downgrade to windows 8.1.
I don't think I can downgrade because I've had it for over the trial days, and would have to reset my PC to downgrade. I'm not going to reinstall all of my applications.

2. Buy another adapter?

I don't know a lot about this type of hardware so if somebody could give me better insight or possibly advice I would really appreciate it.

Did you turn it off and back on again?

dude cmon he already answered this in the op.
What I've tried and hasn't worked:

Try uninstalling it and reinstall it. Delete all of its drivers and reinstall them.

thats dns issues, i have them too, except they dont go away for me and im forced to use wireless only

good luck fixing it, literally everyone i've talked to eventually says reinstall windows

motherboard company says its the isp, and the isp says its the motherboard company

chances are if you haven't already reinstalled drivers and tried manually setting dns, the adapter company will say its the isp and the isp will say its the adapter

If it's a DNS issue, he would be able to connect to a computer on his LAN. Try doing that to be sure it's your adapter.

i've gone through three motherboards, this current one has two onboard lan inputs and all three motherboards have failed with dns issues after a few minutes of use, its likely not his adapter, but rather, the operating system

other computers use the internet just fine and have no dns issues when hardwired, and the only way i can avoid dns issues is wireless

Yeah, that's basically all the answers I've run in to so far.

I've found something interesting:

Instead of plugging the adapter into the bottom piece, I plugged it directly into my computer. It has reduced disconnecting but it has still disconnected once.

Also, if I'm forced to downgrade, is there any way I can do it without completely wiping all of my programs? It almost doesn't seem worth it to have to download endless hours of games and programs.

You could install the OS on a second drive but that would mean you'd need to reinstall all of the "base programs" such as Java onto the new drive and have the games recognize that they're in a different drive letter.

Or you can set the OS drive letter to something else. I personally have it set to F:\.

a great way to quickly check if it truly is dns issues is to run a live installation of a linux distro

i have no dns issues on ubuntu 15.04 with my lan, but on windows its up a stuff creek without a paddle

Looks like I was wrong, it's still frequently disconnecting. How do I know if it's a DNS issue?

I'm at the point where I'm considering re-downloading windows and therefore everything. How would I go about that?

my gf has an adapter like that, it's always been pretty stuff for her too.

If it's a DNS issue like others are saying, then just use a non-stuffty DNS server like Level3's or Google's or OpenDNS's

You can find out if it's a DNS issue if you can do stuff like:
open cmd⋅exe and type:
Code: [Select]
ping 8.8.8.8And it works. (8.8.8.8 is Google's DNS)
And then if you try something like
Code: [Select]
ping google.comAnd it says that the name cannot be resolved, then it is a DNS issue and you should manually set your DNS server.

(CloudFlare blocks you from typing cmd[period]exe lol)

Update drivers
