Author Topic: I'm super terrifed of making phone calls and I don't know why  (Read 1684 times)

so I need to call somebody for something and for as long as I can remember I get really anxious when I have to make phone calls and I can't figure out why
I can talk to people irl just fine but if I need to call them NOPE my brain just freaks the forget out
I'm gonna man up and call them anyways but does anybody have any idea why this happens

I'm going to sleep once I hit the post button so I'll tune in tomorrow morning

why is this thread giving me deja vu

i have a similar absurd anxiety, or at least had one until i realized that the people on the other side of the phone are literally professionals who live and die based on whether they're being tolerable or not

there's even a game on that

This used to happen to me as well. It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but as a teenager I would get very anxious at even the idea of calling someone I didn't know. The feeling vanishes once you make enough calls; as simple as it sounds, the key is to treat phone calls as regular conversations. If anything, calls should be less stressful than everyday conversation, since you don't need to worry about looking engaged or attentive and you can't see who you're conversing with.

yeah it sucks, it comes from not being able to read physical social cues on their face

im fine with making phone calls to family, but when I had to call up a company to apply for a job I spent like 10 minutes just thinking of what to say because I was so scared. I actually started playing mary had a little lamb with the number tones at one point just to procrastinate

You must have phoneophobia
I am sorta scared of making phone calls too, but I am extremely terrified of taking pills

Trust me, this scare goes away when you don't pay your bills and they call you for a 3 hour chat about how they're going to cut you off if you don't pay this month's bill and all you owe.

social anxiety is a weird bird but we all have a form of it. Don't worry you're not alone.

back in october I started this internship program where i was basically tech support for this local college. teachers/staff would call in through the phone and tell me what problem they're having with their computer/tablet or whatever and id type up a ticket for someone to eventually fix in the next week or two.

only problem was I had absolutely no idea what problems id be told and how to put them down on the ticket. so I didn't bother answering the phone for the one day I came in and ended up quitting. i hate talking  or thinking about it but id thought I would share anyways

its a common fear i have the same
