Google's Alphago just beat Lee Sedol in their first of five matches of Go

Lee Sedol resigned, allowing Alphago victory.

For a long time it was widely regarded as impossible to create a truly competitive AI Go machine. Go, while it has essentially only 2 rules, has such great depth that it is very difficult for a non-human player (and still extremely difficult for a human player) to consistently choose moves well.
Lee Sedol is basically the best Go player there is.

The streams themselves are pretty dull for someone like myself who does not well understand the strategies of Go, but it was pretty funny to see the commentators get all worked up about it, and regardless of how silly that was, it was also completely valid. This is an unprecedented advance.
