Probably because it's more useful to know of 50 different countries and where they are, than to know of 50 different states and their location in one country.

When it comes to international news/relations what are you going to hear;
"Today Iran came to a deal with US businesses"?
or
"Today Iran came to a deal with Kentucky businesses"?

Even if it was a deal with Kentucky, you could say USA instead and everyone would know who and where you were talking about.

Here in the US, schools kinda touch on most countries but no one ever remembers them because most people don't care. The majority of them retain the 50 states, and the general location of the major countries of the world (Japan, China, Russia, and the UK among others). They also tend to know about Mexico and Canada since we kinda border them. But when it comes to smaller countries and things like the Canadian provinces, our school systems stop caring.

Yeah, it's all relevant to your nation basically.

It was more important for us to learn our western European neighbours, our former major territories and the big important nations.
No worth to knowing the American states, or the regions of France, or even our own counties.

yeah i dont know the capitals of most states

i know for a fact that dallas isn't the capital of texas, and that the capitals of new york and kansas are albany (because it's not new york city) and kansas city respectively, but otherwise i dont pay much attention

The big Kansas City is not even in Kansas. It's the second biggest city in Missouri iirc.

And if I forgot the capital of Texas, I'd be forgetting my own name.

It's on the border between Kansas and Missouri, I actually think part of it is in Kansas.
