The original elite game!

I really liked playing UT2004 when I had to use a trash laptop

ooo i want this game

just so you know that gif showcases 90% of the content
the remaining 10% is the menu

idk if it will run on that laptop but warframe is free and pretty well optimized

it looks kinda neat tho...

quake 3 arena
doom 1 and 2
simcity 2000
any pre-n64 game

Cortex Command (probably?)

are you trying to turn his computer into an active volcano

cortex command can get scary laggy really quickly if your cpu is closely related and/or identical to a potato

as for easy to run games:

cave story (fun fact you can even play cave story on a phone)

any goldsrc and source game, they are incredibly optimized (except for all of the latest ones, it seems like it's only gone downhill in that aspect)

any roguelike should be bearable to play

it can also be quite enjoyable (maybe in a guilty kind of way) to play rpgmaker games

okay i actually dont have a lot of free games that aren't random junk so i'll just throw a couple more links i guess

iji
hyper princess pitch
hero core

an untitled story (direct download link)
marble blast gold/platinum/etc

stabyourself.net has a couple of cool games

knytt stories is absolutely GREAT and has tons of really really good custom maps! (knytt stories+ and knytt stories EX if you want to get deeper into the whole custom level business)

within a deep forest is also really really good

The problem is the engine for me,its so laggy and it makes the controls clunky.

Cave story can actually run at full speed sometimes when using the interpreter on the dolphin emulator. Yes,a Software Interpreter.
