Author Topic: Conservative or liberal?  (Read 2802 times)

I fall somewhere between extreme libertarian and anarchy. I think that the government should basically only enforce a few barebones laws and that if everybody looks out for themselves then it will do good for the country.

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the military, though.

I'd like to consider myself as a centrist.

i firmly believe that I'm a centrist
well more center-right, but certainly not conservative

Obviously liberal (even though I'd consider myself moderate on certain economic and social policies).

hurk
political terminology is just so obnoxious
"liberal" in the US does not mean the same as "liberal" in europe and it does not mean the same thing as "liberal" in history nor the same as "libertarian" or "progressive"
"conservative" also has changed meaning over time
"socialist," "authoritarian," and "anarchist" are the closest to being consistent but even socialism has drifted into moderate territory over time

Basically, this is the closest thing to a "standard" world set of terms:
Liberal: supports civil freedom and economic freedom (US libertarian) and supports progress in a classical sense; in this view, Anarchists are extreme liberals
Conservative: supports economic freedom but restricts civil freedom (US conservative), and supports the status quo; Reactionaries are extreme conservatives, supporting a return to previous times
Socialist: supports civil freedom but restricts economic freedom (US liberal) and supports progress in a keynesian sense; Greens are very similar, but tend to be more moderate economically and place a greater emphasis on the environment; Communists are extreme socialists
Authoritarian: restricts both civil and economic freedom (not common in the US) and supports a strong state; Fascists are extreme authoritarians

Note that none of these say anything about what kind of government it is. You can have a liberal or a communist dictatorship (Napoleon and Stalin) and an authoritarian or reactionary democracy (Putin and Annoying Orange).
I consider myself a social democrat or green, in other words a moderate socialist that denies communism and many tenets of Marxism.

Since the majority of blocklanders live in america, we can just assume that the terminology is american.

It's still a pretty blatant disregard for history and the purity of the terms.

In other news, I've never really understood conservatism as an ideology. I understand the economic freedom/capitalism part - I disagree, but it's hard to argue with freedom - but I have NEVER understood societal conservativism. Why would you back tradition over progress? What's so appealing about hanging on to traditional values? And have you noticed that the conservatives never get a good name throughout history (slavery, civil rights movement, American Revolution, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Revolutions of 1848, serfdom, longer hours and worker compensation in the Industrial Era, the list goes on)? It just sorta baffles me. Decisions like gay marriage seem totally obvious to me (versus economic issues, which I understand the conservative stance on).

left-leaning centrist overall

EDIT: still very centrist even with the diamond, although definitely socialist when dealing with social issues

According to Tristan's neat little policy diamond, I'm a socialist to some degree.

I should probably mention that reactionism can be seen most in groups like Daesh, which try to restore the world back to a medieval-like state of thinking.

I did make the graphic, but the idea isn't my own. It's called a Nolan Chart, and while it was created by libertarians/liberals, I think it adequately describes ideologies without any bias.

wheres the national socialist option

Anytime I take political tests, I always land somewhere roughly in the middle between liberal and conservative, but most of my beliefs are pretty full-blown conservative. Although I can see the viewpoints of both sides, I do not, I repeat, do not get along well with liberals in discussion threads.
