They weren't annexed until 1898.

To clarify some stuff, the source map was from 1900 and then I went back and changed what I could remember (including Hawaii, Cuba, and the Philippines). I obviously forgot a few things plus a few inaccuracies in the map even for 1900.

I was under the impression you were using coloration to denote ownership regardless of annexation

I am, to some extent. But Egypt and India were formally under British influence, while Hawaii was de facto, but not de jure, US controlled.
