If you're not sure, the anime ended at chapter 33. It might be a good idea to start from there so you can familiarize yourself with what happens.

i wouldn't say it's as cliche as most other anime, but a lot of people definitely give it more credit/think it's much more than it actually is. it's just a nice little story where you can be both sad and happy at the same time, and the cool part is that it was written by a gaijin.
