Author Topic: What type of challenge do you expect from games?  (Read 1297 times)

I was just curious what kind of challenge BLF enjoys most in a game - difficulty in execution or in planning - or if you guys just play to have fun, even if the game is easy (and there's nothing wrong with that).

Personally, I enjoy games that challenge you with thought rather than precision and speed. Most of my favorite games are either strategy (Paradox games) or puzzle games (Portal 2), and when playing other games I tend to pick the more strategic options, like stealth instead of brawn in Dishonored and picking Medic or Engi in TF2. One of my favorite games, Paper Mario: TTYD, is something of a pleasant oddity because it's a turn based game (and thus naturally strategic) but uses some real-time skill-based elements in the form of action commands. This does kind of explain why I don't really enjoy shooters all that much, though.

Strategic turn based challenge
And being unable to do anything when you realize you forgeted up bad

it depends on the actual game genre

I don't like to put in a lot of forethought, which is why I'd make for a terrible political leader. I like to improvise and plan while I'm already in motion, which is why I adore faster-pace games like Ratchet & Clank, Audiosurf or Counter-Strike.

I do enjoy puzzle games like Portal 2, but the thrill for me is how fast I can solve them and rush through to the end, rather than pacing myself out. Should be noted that I always prefer to go for no-kill-stealth runs in certain games (like Deus Ex), but even then it always comes down to very fast, improvised plans of action, trying to incapacitate all the enemies (if there's EXP on the table and the option is available) or rushing through to the exit quickly.

In class-based games, I'll play one of two roles; I'll either be the objective-taker (for example, capturing flags) and I'll move quick as possible with little preparation time to each objective, or I'll play support and I'll focus my entire game-time in stuff like healing players, fixing devices, collecting vehicles/ammo for others etc. Again, I try and rush between team-mates and get everything done quickly. Good example of a game where I play both is Tribes: Ascend; I know the perfect path to capture the flag on every map and so you'll usually see me with 10+ captures by match end, simply flying between the two capture points, but sometimes I'll go entirely as an Engineer and spend the whole game reparing engines and turrets, usually getting over 500 repair medals before match end.

i expect to want to kill my actual self within 10 minutes

dark souls 1, 2, and 3

Both, but more leaning towards execution.

i'd like both in them

but dark souls has skewed my opinion of an "execution" challenge in the sense that not dying in two seconds isn't very hard anymore

I purposefully didn't put "both" in the poll, because then almost everyone would vote for it and the poll wouldn't be informative at all

I like all kinds tbh.

Some games combine strategy and execution which I like (League of Legends, StarCraft, Age of Empires)

In StarCraft, if you don't micro properly, strategy doesn't matter

You can be a micro god, but someone less skilled but with a better strategy will win 9/10 times.

To be honest I really can't pick between the two.

I have played less speedy execution games but I do enjoy them. Using fast thinking and reflexes to beat something is a pretty rewarding feeling you can't get when strategizing beforehand. The problem is when you're playing repetitive bosses in action games that are easy to read. Action adventure games with a challenge is probably my favorite genre but Fire Emblem is one of my favorite series in general.

On the other hand I hate puzzle games but I enjoy most strategy games (even if I suck at them). I like making a plan that succeeds, but the most fun comes out of a plan failing and then trying to correct your mistakes best as possible.

i expect to be mentally challenged

strategy, because i enjoy slacking off in execution if i can

unless im playing something like monster hunter or dark souls

i expect to be mentally challenged
