Defending a group doesn't mean you support it. I support Bernie Sanders but I had a Hillary Clinton avatar for a good while. I'll add an Islamic Star to my avatar though.

yeah it applies to all mainstream religions.  i think human psychology is definitely different depending on your community and environmental situations.  uneducated people in desperate, desolate places get brainwashed from birth into thinking that they can have a better afterlife with 72 virgins by doing 1 simple trick!  blow up the infidels and we'll hook ya'll up real good afterwards....

the fear is definitely rational. lots of people are dying and western society as a whole would appear to be a target. prejudice, however, is never rational, and that's what people have to be careful about, because it's really easy to become prejudiced when you're afraid
