Author Topic: Gots me a shiny new 2004 Gibson SG!  (Read 3301 times)

So, today at lunch, I went and picked myself up a 2004 SG Special. It's not as flashy as a standard, but it sounds the same, and it sounds absolutely phenomenal. The tones are so fat and just uggghhh I love it. The Strat's an amazing guitar, but I just didn't quite click with it. Overall, extremely happy with my purchase since he threw in a brand new Gibson hardshell case with purple crushed velvet as the lining. I can go back and buy the strat cause I got a good deal, but I'm extremely happy with the Gibson so I won't be needing a strat anytime soon. Thank you to everyone for your input, comments, and suggestions. It's much appreciated.

Well the strat is HSS while the Gibby is HH, so tonally very different guitars when plugged in. Strat may be a bit more versatile, with the extra middle pickup, but you wont get hum cancellation on mid or neck. Gibby is going to be a much more modern sound. After that it just comes down to feel and personal preference.

To me, I think the strat is worth it. Like shadows said, it really does come to personal preference.

Right now I'm just deciding what I want to go for as far as tone. Looks are secondary and almost trivial. I'm going to bring my strap and my amp into the store tomorrow. The Strat is ash with a maple neck, and the Gibson is all mahogany as you'd expect. I'm going to have my dad act as a bouncer so people don't try to come and talk to me. This is my first time "really" buying a guitar.

Yeah I mean Jesus it's an American Standard for under a grand. Not sure what the case situation is. It's all about the tone though. I'm more comfortable with the Gibson's neck because I come from Ibanez's and Jacksons with a Fender acoustic

If y'all recommend one specifically, I'd appreciate your reasons for saying so.

And thanks man :)

Again, Strat is a little more traditional, but it does have a humbucker in the bridge, so it's going to sound very similar to the bridge on the Gibson. The Strat bridge pup is probably a little colder than the Gibson, more mid focused more than likely. The Gibson will probably have a hotter pickup, probably more bass response. Wood choice on an electric guitar is a lot less important than you think. The affectation on tone plugged in is very minimal; present but minimal. It has more to do with construction and hardware. Strat has a Trem on it, so sustain isn't gong to be like the Gibson, which has a hard tail. Strat has a bolt on neck so it's going to have a brighter attack as opposed to the Gibson's set neck (I think that one is set neck, correct me if I'm wrong). The MOST important part is how the guitar feels when you play it.

I agree, col. derontchi is what they call, a "lovable goofball" if u wil

i would get the strat because i love the sound of the fender coils and the look of the actual guitar.

The neck is a very crucial factor in tone specifically. The action as well. The Fender's notes are going to be warmer and thicker, most likely. I'm going to pick out a few of my favorite riffs and play each of them on both guitars and compare. I'm also reading a few techniques on how to Jew yourself out of a few extra bucks :). I already got a brand new hardshell case on the Gibson. I believe it is a set neck, yes.

Awww thank you kindly

personally I think both look stunning. Of course the SG isn't as flashy as a standard would be, but I really like the lookd of both. However feel and playability above all else

All comes down to what you like tone wise.

The HSS Fender would be bright of course due to the single coil pick ups but yoy could switch to the "thicker" sound of the humbucker, Personally I'd go with the SG.

What genres do you play?

I play a lot of classic rock, and some blues. But I've also been learning things like SRV and Cliffs of Dover. I fell in love with the SG listening to Angus Young's guitar tone, but the Strat is more versatile. I also play in my school's jazz band, but I have an Ibanez S-type that I use for rhythm. Lead, however, I can't do bends with due to the Floyd Rose system. In my free time I play stuff like Kansas, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Metallica, etc.

you and donnie should have a guitar-off
