essentially the desire for a world government or larger governments spanning several countries
that's really only one potential manifestation of globalization

i'm not too well-versed on the specifics of it all, but globalization economically and culturally is probably a very good thing for us. the internet has made the world a much better place because of how it helps globalize culture and information, and more free trade across the world is economically a fantastic thing. the kind of globalization you're talking about obviously would have problems since a government that large would have a lot of trouble with more local interests

Economists pretty much unanimously agree that globalized, free economies are a good thing. One of the few agreed absolute facts of economics is that restricting trade damages economies in the long-run. This is why Annoying Orange looks especially terrible in the eyes of economists.

'Culturally' is more of a tricky business. The cultural argument against globalization tends to be rooted in a lot of fear-mongering and racism, so I don't really have a fact-based counterargument for that. If you're pathologically afraid of foreigners, obviously you won't like globalization.

This is not globalization. This is the conspiracy theorist interpretation of globalization that views any step away from nationalism as a sign that we're going to enter some kind of new world order governed by an all-powerful world government. This will not happen, as even though there's plenty of international organizations (NATO, UN, EU, etc) our definition of sovereignty hasn't changed at all.

Why do people think petitions change anything

I am curious what UKIP will do now. They've always had more plans for leaving the EU than running the country afterwards.

And while they did well in terms of votes (but not seats) last general election, they've typically had better luck getting seats as MEP's than MP's.

So it will be interesting to see if they carry on as a party intent on getting elected or if its members will start to fall back into the conservative party.

Democracy =/= Call revotes until you get the outcome you want

I think someone on reddit was saying like 60% of the votes in the petition weren't even from the UK.
I don't know how you check that though.
