Author Topic: Sonic Mania - Sega goes back to their roots  (Read 2675 times)

but anyways what do you mean by all that since I haven't seen the conference
SEGA held a 4 hour Sonic 25th Anniversary event today that was live-streamed on Twitch. It was the most abysmal piece of stuff I've ever seen.

  • The Sonic Mania trailer was played twice in a row, and then played once more later on. During the first showing, the host talked over the trailer and at some points might quite inane comments about the game.
  • SEGA said they were not making a sequel to Sonic Generations, and then preceded to show a trailer for a game which has Sonic and Retro Sonic from Sonic Generations. They haven't given it a proper name, and of course no game-footage in that trailer.
  • They spent a lot of time hyping up the Sonic mobile game and its new DLC pack or whatever it was.
  • There was MASSIVE audio/visual problems throughout the entire event. For ~2 hours, there was a large buzzing noise and the only response the Twitch got to the complaints was for the buzzing noise to become louder. Add in a lot of microphone cutouts, inconsistent volume, shaky camera from ridiculous angles...
  • The person directing the event constantly cut the Twitch stream away from the main stage to show off ridiculous things like people eating Natchos or sold-out merchandise.
  • They have created a line of toys for a cross-over between Sonic and Hello Kitty, including a skateboard deck which sold out within 2 minutes of being announced because they only made 25 of the forgeters.
  • At least an entire hour was dedicated to two musicians butchering some of the best Sonic songs of all time; both the guitarist and the singer were regularly off-key and seemed to have no idea of what they were doing.
  • They "changed schedule" a lot, meaning there was a lot of time spent watching the "Loading" screen instead of the stage.
  • And of course, they confirmed that they haven't started work on a Sonic Adventure 3. forget you.

Maybe Sonic Mania will be a decent Sonic game after years of stuff, but the presentation was absolutely awful. One of the most cringe-filled things I've ever witnessed in my life.

I wouldn't judge if a game is worth investing interest into over a poorly planned and executed conference.

I'm sure the Crowbcat video will be entertaining, but the game looks fun.

Reminds me of Sonic before the sequel, except polished.

wasnt mcjob the one who stuff himself over people being saying no man's sky is going to be a disappointment

And of course, they confirmed that they haven't started work on a Sonic Adventure 3. forget you.

good because the sonic adventure series is awful

Keep in mind that the No Man's Sky team are going for something big and innovative, while Sonic Team are trying to remake the last games that earned them money, back when the Genesis was popular.

i like no man's sky but i won't play it until someone makes a mod that'll allow me to play it without eye strain after 10 minutes

from what i've seen you can't even escape to space to get away from the loving pastel colorset, space is brightly colored too

you can't judge a game by it's marketing, how would you know??

If that's true, why does anybody bother getting hyped for games? If anything could be truth or a lie, why give a stuff? Why should marketing spend time and money producing these trailers? Ultimately, this is the stuff we have to go off and form our opinions on. It's quite obviously not what we think of the final product; we're just making guesses at how we think it's going to be.

Personally, I think this is just far too similar to the old Sonic games; almost like they've managed to just rip the sprites, slap it in a new engine and get away with it. As I said, I might be wrong, but based on what SEGA thinks is a good idea, I don't have much trust in them and I'm waiting to see if they can prove me wrong.

Sonic Team
And all of the other guys that aren't sonic team.

Christian Whitehead knows what he's doing, he's already made an extremely successful fan game, along with amazing ports of several games.

Everything in No Man's Sky has been done before. Starbound with its bland procedurally generated universe where everything looks the same, countless space flight sims, etc. Its just that nobody's put them together before afaik. ALSO BIG AND INNOVATIVE DOESNT EQUATE TO GOOD
Sonic Team are trying to remake the last games that earned them money, back when the Genesis was popular.
Can't wait for the Sonic Generations remake!

Can you vouch for SEGA, his new boss?

Its just that nobody's put them together before afaik.
Because it's been a technical and design nightmare, and it's far more difficult than you're giving credit to.

I'm prepared to eat my words if the game is stuff, which in all respects it absolutely could be. As I said, I'm only going off the marketing materials since that's all we've got, and it's the same for any bloody game that people announce. I'm excited for the idea of something new. I'm less excited for the idea of playing the same game which I could pick up at Gametraders for $20 today.

ALSO BIG AND INNOVATIVE DOESNT EQUATE TO GOOD
Innovation gets us closer to where we need to be. If everybody makes the same stuff day in, day out, we don't loving progress anywhere and people get bored.

Why do people complain about CoD, even though 4: Modern Warfare is seen as a masterpiece?

Christian Whitehead knows what he's doing

erwin rommel knew what he was doing too

Looks like it could be neat. The sonic livestream had some bad parts but I enjoyed the music, Didn't expect somebody to be able to sing a song the same way they did in a recording studio 15 years ago.
(shame about them cutting to the crowd constantly with no crowd audio though ;;)

Christian Whitehead that glorious bastard
This is going to be great
