Author Topic: Feminists realize that their word is bad and now want to change it.  (Read 3843 times)

If feminists could use a new word it would make feminism a lot more palatable.
Egalitarianism?

I used to be one of those people outspokenly against modern feminism because it felt personally insulting to be blamed for a bunch of white middle-classed chicks having it so hard until I realized both sides of the coin are not groups I want to associate with. Now I think there's a healthy middle ground somewhere that most reasonable people reside where there's a lot less shouting and angered ranting. Who wants to be angry all the time, anyways?

Egalitarianism?
Yeah but egaliatarianism is like super broad. The word doesn't really have a focus so it's a lot harder to be, like, passive instead of active about inequality.

I think the best solution is to just stick with feminist - feminism as it stands right now is mostly made up of activists. Trying to change the word to appeal to the general public is sort of a fruitless endeavour because the general public is passive - so if you're that kind of "sideline supporter" than maybe egalitarian is the only word you need.

What I don't like is poltiically active people calling themselves "egalitarian" because they're trying to distance themselves from feminism. You should just call yourself a feminist / LGBT activist / racial equality activist / whatever. Just because there are bad apples in a movement doesn't mean that you should aggressively avoid a clearer label like that.

Basically this. I don't understand how people don't just get exhausted thinking about this stuff all the time. Also, I'd argue that when minorities/oppressed people are angry/shouting, it might be because a political issue has a direct, personal effect on their life and their community.

While I resent the "extremes are horrible" political idea, often times when you take a completely static, immovable stance on something, you're ignoring legitimate rationale for the other side. If people just tried to be more receptive instead of shouting over eachothers heads, the world would be a lot better.

I didn't expect you to be a humanitarian, tony

I'm a nihilist.

I'm a nihilist.
but why did you speak for a humanitarian then

I respectfully disagree. I'm never going to seriously consider a feminist point of view because at the end of the day it will never directly benefit me or anyone I care about. Call me stubborn or an starfish, maybe it would have been different back in the day when the movement meant something. It's different these days because there are no stakes, nobody's on the line and engaging with a feminist of any shade always ends up with me on the defensive just because I'm a dude.

My post was about a middle ground where there's less shouty and more people saying things that make sense. It doesn't mean I agree with feminist ideals from time to time but it means I don't go on a crusade against feminism like Tony seems to enjoy

wonder what world you're living in lord tony cause none of what you stated is the case in practically everywhere i've been. yeah sure there's places where suits are required and such but those tend to be strictly the lawyer/legal/political professions.
He's only ever worked at Walmart and has probably never even stepped into an office.
I would be genuinely surprised if he even owned a suit.

Tony's worldview comes from his limited selection of websites and cartoons.

He's defending that bullstuff claiming office air conditioning is loveist.
are you talking about yourself in the third person?

edit: no, I see now. I was about to die though
