Blender is free (open source and cost) but hard to use for some people.
Milkshape is relatively easy to use but costs about US$25-$35 depending on exchange rates. (25 Euros, can't find cost in £ Pounds)
3ds max has loads of hard to use professional features and costs a lot more than either of the others.

The latest version of 3DStudio Max costs approximately $3000 if I'm not mistaken.
And I think milkshape's price has been bumped up to 35 Euros.
