Author Topic: Got some nasty computer viruses and I'm not convinced they are all gone  (Read 2262 times)

combofix usually finished the job, but we didn't use it often because it had a strangely nasty habit of loving with certain PCs...
Just as Trymos said, ComboFix is a bit like the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile of antivirus software. It's designed as a last resort and is generally only used for the most stubborn viruses, which usually are unresearched at the point when you're forced to use CF.

It has very strict definitions on what "safe" files are and will trigger upon anything with even the slightest curiosity about it.

I never advise Factory Resetting, unless there's proof of something absolutely, catastrophically wrong with the install (such as annihilating your registry, as one idiot did to his poor PC). I actually had one cunt recommend me do a reinstall of Windows because a single GTA V mod wouldn't work. The fact of the matter is that if anything is able to put a permanent dent in a Windows Vista+ installation, it's probably not going to go away with a reinstall (rootkits are absolutely horrific little buggers).

If you have an SSD, do not run a disk defragmentation program, unless you want your SSD to die much quicker. CCleaner is good for cleaning out temp files, but it's usually best NOT to run the Registry Cleaner, as there's little to no performance benefit and may actually cause damage to the system depending on what it picks up.

As bestguy22 said, assuming Windows 10, open up the Task Manager, go to the "Start-up" tab and look very carefully at what applications are starting up on launch and the impact they have on your boot. It's possible that you might have some anti-virus applications set to silently run on start which are bogging the system down. If you do not have Windows 10, you'll need to goto the Run dialog, open up "msconfig" and go to the Startup section. You won't have any data on impact times, so you'll need to basically wing it and start disabling services to test what's bringing the system down.

Ultimately, if you've run 6 different antivirus programs, chances are that you're in a good state. MB, Hitman and ComboFix are extremely solid, not much is getting by them.

if you reinstall windows over a gta v mod, you're a loving handicap, end of story on that part.

and since we're no longer in 2008, the rise of large amounts of external storage came around and made reinstalling windows more of a time waster then anything.
if you don't feel safe with your install, DBAN all drives on the system and reinstall windows. it's not the end of the world nor is it a kneejerk reaction, because pretty much every virus are a bunch of sneaky little forgeters and you have no way of visually knowing whether or not you're truly clean, this is most true when you found a rootkit on the system. if you're at the point where you have rootkits, you also probably have 0 days on the system. in that scenario no antivirus is gonna help you there, it's only a chance but is it one you want to be taking?

then you could plug in your external storage media into a live cd enviroment/recover from cloud backup (all the files into 1 folder for now) and just scan the entire drive/folder with a bunch of different stuff so you don't get reinfected.

we're not talking about some random richardface demanding to reinstall windows over gta v mods, we're talking about entire computers that were horribly infected and probably will end up getting cc information and other financially identifiable information written with it when the owner wants to buy a satanic kitty plush on amazon or end up in a botnet to help conduct DDoS attacks or make the hackers money.

Ultimately, my post was to try and defuse a bit of your fears and point out that it might more just general anxiety than an actual problem.

But as Trymos is saying, it's your system and it's up to you on how comfortable you are with the current install. If you really do believe that there's something still wrong, then backup your files and reinstall Windows (making sure to read Trymos' post since is has some valuable information).

It's just important that you do a little more searching, get the facts and make a calm decision instead of wasting a lot of time and effort backing up files and reinstalling the OS and all your programs only to discover that logging in was always that slow.

brother what did you download?

brother what did you download?
probably went onto the deep web and downloaded child research and ram

If you have really NASTY viruses, they are already in your hard drive. So basically, the only way to get rid of them is to take it to a pro dude (no regular teens at computer stores) or get a new hard drive. Really rare these days to get nasty viruses, so that's "new", I guess.

in other words please go and follow my misinformation that will cost you more than the actual way to do this

Alright I ran CCleaner and it just came up with firewall stuff that I had before and cookies. I'm doing full scans with Avast and Malwarebytes (was doing them overnight but they're still not done). Avast has found 58 items so far and Malwarebytes has found 7. But neither of them are done and they probably wont be done for a while
