Author Topic: A Philosophical Question: Should sentient/sapient robots/AI be granted rights?  (Read 5655 times)

I think the three laws are essentially to prevent complex decision-making machines from making decisions harmful to us. A truly intelligent program would have morals, and therefore not need to be artificially restricted.

Thanks for asking how it'd theoretically work instead of being a naysayer dipstuff like Satan.

Perhaps I'd start small in some way, I wanna be a gunsmith making some manually-operated carbines, like pump action, bolt action, and maybe even lever action, chambered in P.D.W. cartridges, similar to FN 5.7x28 millimetre. I'd try to submit my designs to a good manufacturer, and when I start making money, I'll put it into eventually making a simple security company, and hopefully build it up from there into a Humanitarian private military of my own. And keeping on topic, I'd want to include Robots in my forces, with various duties both in and out of combat if they want to work for me.

You'd probably have to start off getting a bachelor's in mechanical engineering at the very least to get your foot in the door. I heard from a couple dudes at a gun shop I know of having experience in 2D and 3D CAD design software in order to get anywhere in manufacturing and engineering. I know for a fact that the society of mechanical engineers offer certificates and licensing for firearm engineering. It's a competitive market, and it's going to be an uphill battle to get a manufacturer to pick up your design. Definitely something you gotta spend a good while working at.

As far as the PMC thing goes, it's definitely ambitious. I don't know much about it, but I'm assuming if you want to get anywhere you'll have to exceed industry standards (and have a lot of loving money). That's not an easy task.

I know it's based in science fiction. But people are suggesting we actually apply it to real Robots and Ai, and I think it's rather sick and cowardly in some regards. It's like, they think the machines are undoubtedly rise up and kill us all if they don't have the Three Laws. Yeah, they might, if we treat them poorly despite their mental and physical capabilities possibly going above our own, like how the Quarians treated the Geth in Mass Effect. And even though that's also science fiction, it's a rather rare example of intelligent machines being abused and rightfully starting a revolution, rather than the usual Robots-go-crazy-and-kill-everyone-for-no-reason things.

It isn't about the treatment of robotics, it doesn't matter how we treat AI because they won't "feel" anything. They will be programmed to do their job and need failsafe laws in place so they don't cause harm of collateral damage.

Giving robots feelings and sapience is a good science fiction plot device but it's really not that practical.

That's some sound career advice. I expect metallurgy would be important too, both for the guns and the Robots.

Probably nothing more than an applied course

Anyways as far as PMCs go, you'd still be an overglorified security company, just with bigger and possibly richer clienteles. The extent of the jobs you'll probably be taking on will be at high security places like shipyards, nuclear plants and government construction areas where you'll be selling safety. No airdropping into a cartel meetup to blast everyone and abscond with the drugs. Just a lot of waiting, watching and calling the cops / arresting suspicious handicaps who got too close to the gate at 3 am in the morning

I'd imagine it would be dependent on how they were created, and what for. If you gave a robot sentient thought and an artificial life, but he was designed ultimately to be a computer, then it should only be granted the rights his creator(s) have given it. If it was a robot designed for human brown townysis or for psychotherapy, or to essentially act like a metal-MAN, then I suppose it should be granted rights.

Like I said before though, it would be dependent on how they were created and what their use is.

You give that Outer Heaven avatar a bad name

This is the plot of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Measure of a Man". Not rape of course, but forced dissection of an android.
Quote
"The decision we arrive at today will reach far beyond this courtroom and this one android. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom: expanding them for some, savagely curtailing them for others. Are you prepared to condemn him [Commander Data] – and all who will come after him – to servitude and slavery? Your honor, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life: well, there it sits! Waiting."

Try to explain why you think that.

Try to explain why you think that.

With robot/AI soldiers, you are just as bad as the people Big Boss spent his entire life fighting.

im gonna make my own PMC and name it after my dog

Will it have blackjack and hookers?

*Snort* Okay, well did you know that, IN OUTER HEAVEN, there were cybernetic Ai soldiers called Bloody Brad?

Venom Snake =/= Big Boss

With AI soldiers you have no loyalty. You have no comradery, you have nobody to tell you 'no'. All you have is a force of yes men who will never try and correct you, never interact with you, never breath the air you breath or share the pain you feel. You build a lie around yourself on the backs of machines that are programmed and forced to follow your command, even if that command would lead your entire way of life and overall achievements to the world to ruin.

Get that snort checked out though, you might have a nasal infection.
