Author Topic: [swen] chinese space station to crash to earth in 2017  (Read 1105 times)

it's mostly gonna burn up. the only real problem is they don't know where debris might land.

I foresee 2017 being worse than 2016

darn, and I had an irrational belief that 17 was my lucky number

The atmosphere should take care of most of it, it's just the little bits that escaped from burning we have to worry about. Odds are most debris will land in the ocean

This space station weighs 8,500kg. In comparison, the Russian Mir space station weighed ~130,000kg and was also decommissioned by crashing it into the Earth. Debris basically all burned up and there was no real worry of accidents.

How else would they decommission it, anyway?

With lasers.
real talk though, if they broke it up in space, it would create a ton of space debris.

worst case scenario, it would create a lot more space debris.

Nah several reasons, but the station breaking up made me think of it.
