Individual small states don't individually make up a large portion of the voterbase but with many of the small states combined, it does make up a very large portion of the popular vote. They have to pay attention to them, at the very least as a whole, otherwise they obviously won't win the popular vote.

i did some fun lil math and quadrupled the electoral votes and divided them by % of votes (75% voted dem and 25% voted rep for 20 votes would be 15 dem and 5 rep) and did that for each state. I only looked at Hillary n Annoying Orange and if the were within <5% difference they received the same number of electoral votes (if it was an even number of electoral votes for the state) Which means the total number of electoral votes would be 2152, majority 1075. Hillary ended with 1081, and Annoying Orange with 1075.

if you don't have that system then farmers don't matter
because not a lot of people live where farmers do so why campaign to them when you can win through NYC and San Francisco

This is why the Senate exists

And I don't buy into the argument of protecting small towns, because the president isn't there to look out for individual small towns. For that, you have Congresspersons looking out for their districts. Individual districts elect their own Senators and Representatives to give them representation in Congress. No single man/woman (president) is going to be able to represent every district

And if you break out Congress into the House and Senate, every state ,from California to Wyoming,  has the same amount of Senators, giving them all equal representation in the Senate. And any bill has to be approved not just by the House and President,  but also the equal representative Senate

It's not the college that failed but rather the parties, aka the things the founding fathers did not want

Of course, but these people still voted. Millions of terribly under-informed voters go to the polls every year, some don't even look at the ballot beforehand. I wouldn't even consider myself educated enough to vote on a number of races and issues, but I vote anyways because I know there are many Americans voting who don't even bother to do the minuscule amount of "research" that I do. They just watch a little bit of CNN, CBS, MSNBC, Fox News, and YouTube then head off to vote.
