Author Topic: can i key share with a friend if they already own bl?  (Read 1355 times)

quick question. my friend owns bl and got it after the steam integration, but he wants to play v20 so i believe he has no key. i (of course) bought my key before steam integration and i was wondering if it was okay to share it? or is any type of key sharing just disallowed?

Assume it is okay.. The key sharing rule has always been a situation specific thing. Especially since he won't be playing actual game but v20, I'd say you're fine.

Be careful, if you try and host a v20 server on the master server you'll get punished for it.

Generally from what I've seen, there are only two ways a key gets revoked as a result of key sharing.

1) Posting on the forums that you gave a particular key to someone else.

2) The key in question being abused by the people you give it to, or it being passed around by a number of people and it getting deactivated automatically for being in use in too many different places.

It's good to keep in mind that your authentication key is basically a permanent, unchangeable password to your account that gives absolute access to your account and identity on Blockland. Unless the key is specifically intended for them, if you give it to someone you must have complete trust that they will not abuse it or give it to other people. Protip: You can't really trust people not to do that. Just tell them to buy a key or buy a key for them.

if you share a key and play on different IP addresses (eg. you both play from separate houses), your key will likely get revoked.

your key will likely get revoked.
no

only if you report your key being used then Badspot will check the master server logs and revoke it. It would just "log you out" from every system while the key is in use by one.

Say I use my key at home. I turn off my PC and go to a friend's house and put it there. Close BL, come back home, open my BL, no problem.

I use my key at home, leave BL running. Go to friend's house, enter key. Close BL, go back home, have to reenter key.

i'm not talking about that pastrey. im talking about you and your friend trying to use the same key from different IP address locations at the same time. it will quickly get revoked without you sending any sort of message to badspot. this has happened before.

I actually don't think you're correct about this. There is probably a pretty large margin of error for this, because otherwise people with very dynamic connections like cellular or some vpn's would be in trouble. I've used dynamic vpn's before which changed IP's pretty frequently and never had any trouble.

It won't get revoked. You'll get a "Can't verify BLID" error every time you try to authenticate. You'd have to reinsert your key.

As I had a key steal before, I hadn't gotten any automatic revoke prior to that, being that someone in America was using my key at the same time and proceeding after I log in. I had to manually revoke it

can confirm

I had to manually revoke it
uhh? like emailing badspot or

Of course not. He went to Badspot's office and used his computer to revoke his key. Silly Zealot.

You won't be able to play at the same time, as your friend likely has a different ip address.

Otherwise there isnt any problem here. This constant worry about keys being revoked is kind of ridiculous...

It's whatever Badspot decides. Some times he has revoked a key simply for having two ips logged and other times he's let people like Sylvanor resell 3-digit IDs for hundreds of dollars. It's a crapshoot.
