Author Topic: Annoying Orange: 'Nobody really knows' if climate change is real  (Read 6743 times)

cant believe america willingly elected this incompetent clown

The problem with the debate about climate change is that there seem to be 3 actual perspectives.

The first is the (typically conservative) point of view that says that climate change is less of a problem than is implied. This mentality ranges from either "it doesn't exist" to something like "we can screw off for another 100 years with fossil fuel before doing anything with renewable energy"

Then there's the liberal hogwash that climate change is going to melt the ice caps in 15 years (looking specifically at Al Gore) and that the only way to stop it is to drive a Prius and recycle. This is also equally bullstuff.

The truth is that while climate change is a very real thing, it isn't as dramatic as documentary filmmakers portray it to be. While investment in renewable energy is a positive thing, there has to be a more gradual shift to it, versus the complete cessation of coal mining and fracking that the far left proposes.

I may not disagree with Annoying Orange on alot of things, but this is one of them. And that couldn't have been explained any better.

The truth is that while climate change is a very real thing, it isn't as dramatic as documentary filmmakers portray it to be. While investment in renewable energy is a positive thing, there has to be a more gradual shift to it, versus the complete cessation of coal mining and fracking that the far left proposes.

Even though it really is a tad more dramatic than you think, this alone would cause mass migration, wide-span food shortages from both extreme weather patters and droughts, less habitable land on earth due to extreme temperatures and rising water levels. You think the Syrian refugees are bad? Imagine the amount of people seeking asylum after their coastal states become flooded, or the African / South American refugees seeking asylum after their crops and livestock die out due to severe weather.

In North America alone, a large portion of our population lives in coastal areas which are definitely going to be threatened by rising sea levels. Estimates have shown that due to over-fishing and the ocean acidification process, a lot of marine habitats will die out, causing even more food shortages.

The "Gradual shift" is an issue because experts are saying we should have begun the gradual shift easily twenty years ago, and have definitely changed their tune from prevention to adaption over the turn of the century. The problem now is that our president elect wants to prop up coal and oil to create jobs. While it will create a lot of jobs, it will also hinder adaption a great deal and make our future life that more miserable.

The left does stuff their pants too much about this, but it is definitely going to be our biggest challenge as a species and a denizen of this planet in the next few generations to come. We cannot keep shunting responsibility off to the later generations to make a profit now, we will effectively doom our species.

I've had a good track record with not believing in doomsday theories, whether they'd be the Y2K bug, the 2012 mayan apocalypse, or the LHC going haywire. They just never happen. All the scaremongers can go to hell.

10 years ago Al Gore said that Greenland would melt and launch biblical hurricanes at the country where my grandparents live. That hasn't happened, but thanks for the teenage anxiety, Al. I appreciate it.

okay

Investment in alternative energy is, in my opinion, the key to solving this crCIA. Energy independence, especially cleaner energy, is paramount to beginning to economically distance ourselves from the influence of the middle eastern oil cartels.

The really important bit about this, however, is using nuclear power to aid in the transition. France generates 75% of its electricity through fission reactors. It's inexcusable that the United States as a country have failed to widely embrace nuclear power. It's incredibly safe when  not mismanaged (i.e. Chernobyl) or built on a fault line (Fukushima Daiichi). There's literally no reason except for liberal scaremongering that we haven't done this already.

One would think the left wouldn't mind nuclear power given its relative safety and the minimal emissions (literally just water vapor) but I've heard more absolute drivel from leftists about it than support.

I wholeheartedly agree. The green party's sentiments on nuclear power is a good example of how batstuff insane it gets. I'm glad Annoying Orange is somewhat confident in nuclear energy, having that alone would make us energy independent

"Listen, listen. I do not believe in Doomsday Theories. All rubbish!
They tell me Serbia take over! Rubbish!
They call Great War the 'War to End all Wars'. Rubbish!
They tell me the national socialists will invade Poland. I say rubbish!

Spot on.

The goal is just to become energy independent while we figure out the sustainability bit. We can meet our energy needs for hundreds of years with our resources of thorium and uranium, but we just aren't doing it because the general uninformed public freaks out about nuclear meltdowns (which again, given modern safety standards and practices, are highly unlikely)

We need to adopt nuclear energy ASAP and invest in alternative energy, but for forgets sake, liberals even go so far as to block every plan to build a storage facility for nuclear waste because it's "dangerous" so it is only stored on-site in pools.

I think the economic and environmental benefits of becoming energy independent through nuclear fusion can't be overstated. Americans as a whole need to educate themselves and realize that their concerns are bullstuff and that the benefits of nuclear FAR outweigh the potential ramifications.

Global warming was invented by the jews to stop people from using gas

Imo the global warming is bs. Yeah CO2 has an impact on our atmosphere and whatsnot but its really minor. We just happen to have "entered" a warm period when the the industrial revolution began. Pure coincidence

Notice how the graph has a pattern

The holocaust happened. There's still snow on Mt. Kilimanjaro and I'm still waiting for the Maldives to be completely submerged. Waterworld wasn't a documentary.

The atmospheric carbon levels may fluctuate, but global temperatures are rapidly increasing and it appears there is a correlation between the rising temperatures, retreating ice sheets, and rising levels of atmospheric CO2 in the late Holocene.

There is a correlation between human population, activity, and development which results in a rising global average temperature. While the mechanism by which this happens isn't entirely understood, the prevailing theory is that human activity and emissions of the various "greenhouse gases" play a fairly important role.

Here are some various models of the global temperature anomaly throughout the holocene, starting from 22,000 years ago, all the way to the common era. It's rather obvious that global temperatures rose sharply as the glaciers retreated, but this does not explain why most models are showing a consistent spike in anomaly in the past 500 years to the present day.

Human population and consumption of energy and resources just may have something to do with it.

Just for stuffs and giggles, here's a chart of global human population over time. Notice the spike in the past 1000 years as a correlation with improvements in technology and increased consumption of land and resources. Contrast this with the chart of global temperatures.

climate change = longer summers = surfs up dude haha gnarly man

i never knew this many people on the forum were against doing something about climate change lmao

climate change = longer summers = surfs up dude haha gnarly man
Ah hell yeah
Snip it.
I didnt really mean it had no impact but its not as significant as the media tells you and we all die in 20 years or something
But fair enough
