Author Topic: My Knight and Me: CN dumbs down one of the best animated shorts on Youtube  (Read 2302 times)

before you watch the trailer for this loving asswipe letdown of a show, I demand that you watch the animation it's based on
850 meters
only then will you understand why this is akin to PPG 2016 and TTG

so this animated short comes out on Youtube a few years ago called "850 meters", written and directed by a man by the name of Joeri Christiaen and starring a virtual actor named Roger Flambé
it's a hilarious tale about a knight who seeks fame and fortune (YEAAAAHHHH) and currently it has over 3,000,000 views on YouTube with highly favorable ratings
I first saw it a few years ago and was enthralled, and then saw it again a few years later and realized just how smart the writing and directing of this short is
the construction of the plot teaches a lesson about unrealistic expectations while building up to a surprise twist (no spoilers here) that punctuates the comedy of this animation perfectly
I thought that this guy was pretty good and I wanted to see more from him

"My Knight and Me" is the blandest, most cookie-cutter piece of stuff that I've ever loving seen, and we're talking the film market of loving 2016 here

the cartoon shifts focus to the knight's son and his STRONK FEEMAIL CARIKTR friend who want to become knights too and thus hilarity ensues (THEORETICALLY)
the dad shows up as a cameo every now and then (voiced by a DIFFERENT loving PERSON) and there are many other characters, all walking stereotypes with no development outside their assigned personalities

while the animation of "850 meters" was not Pixar-levels of good, the amount of detail was more than enough to deliver, and in particular, the facial expressions of Roger Flambé knight made up a huge chunk of the comedy
the style employed had crunch to it (in order to match the comedic style) and so the cartoon felt more intense as it moved on

want to know "My Knight and Me"'s animation style?
well, think of the phrase "direct-to-DVD" and picture what comes to mind
that is what you get
you earned it
enjoy
grab the popcorn best show of the year folks

I've already said it before, but the writing in "850 meters" is smart as hell, especially the comedic writing
the simple contradiction of ramping up the intensity of every action and detail in the animation combined with the knight being a massive loser and the constant lowering of the stakes is what delivered most of the laughs for me
it's played as an epic tale of a dangerous journey when really it's the wimpiest, unluckiest attempt to get the girl ever
by the end of it, you're wishing that the knight succeeds and gets the girl just as much as you are wishing that he totally eats it just one more time plz
that and the inclusion of modern-day items was written intelligently because it stood in stark contrast to the time period it was set it, and they actually acknowledged it, with the knight jumping out of his skin at every new gadget he saw
THAT, and there were various different hints layered throughout that were not only funny but hinted directly to the twist ending
I LOVE IT SO MUCH

"My Knight and Me" is NOT intense, just as much as it's NOT FUNNY
they take out the previous comedic style and replace it with NOTHING
modern technology is just part of the world now, everyone acknowledges it and it's so of its time that it challenges Buttercup's beatbox solo for sheer cringe
oh and did I mention the MAIN CHARACTER OF THE ANIMATION TAKES A BACK SEAT TO SHOWCASE BLANDY-BLAND MCRELATABLE
AND ROGER FLAMBÉ IS GONE AND REPLACED WITH "Union VA #362"

overall, we have another horrible reboot on our hands people
apparently third time's NOT the charm, in fact I think the saying is
three strikes and you're loving out CN

ugh

i dislike it. i have a princess special interest but tomboy feminist princess characters are not only as cookie-cutter-cliche as they are preachy, but theyre just a complete turn off. why cant girls just act like girls in media anymore?

why cant girls just act like girls in media anymore?
people would complain on the social media, people would call cartoon network "loveist" for "enforcing gender roles".
hi welcome to the aftermath of 2016

What a weird thing to take and make a cartoon series out of, and it's so graphically downgraded from the original animation

And why is the knight guy behaving more like a knight? In the original animation, he seemed about as much of a knight as Dave the Barbarian was a barbarian, but somehow even less than that

And maybe there's a Harry Potter reference with the sorcery school and flying on brooms? CN has a lot more ideas for shows on reserve that they could've taken the time to make into a full fledged series, but instead they went with this? I dunno, this all just seems weird...

it's this idea that a female character is only strong if she rejects all feminine aspects and punches things. i kinda blame the superhero culture for this, at least this current iteration of it. Gamora, Black Widow, Wonder Woman - they're all basically stoic, straight talking tough chicks who are ridiculously lovey but it's of no consequence. But this ain't some feminist warcry - it's basically Hemingway's economy of emotion stuff, and it creates not strong females, but badass dudes with breasts. Hell, half of these marvel movies don't pass the Bechdel test or just barely scrape by.

love how CN feels that their filler shows need to be this unequivocally bland

- My Knight and Me
- TTG
- PPG

like they can't handle more than two great shows at a time

"we can't run a full series of Infinity Train and OK KO! at the same time as Steven Universe and Adventure Time! that wouldn't do well for our ratings!!!!!"

can we just have another cartoon renaissance please

Shows that are in 3D and isnt Ajin or Knights of Sidonia is automatically trash

oh no CN is going down the road of Nickelodeon, forget.
first nick turns the lowest budget flash animation to exist into a show, and now this?

I had a short essay here but I realized that I shouldn't say in 200 words what I can say in 21.
MK&M is a full season of 29 made-for-tv episodes, each almost as long as 850M. 850M was a passion project.

can you stop being a goddamn weeb this is an anime free zone

It WOULDN'T be good for their ratings. They'd be blowing their good shows all at once and people wouldn't be saying "yo cartoon network is p cool" all year-round.
