Author Topic: [NEWS] Mosque in Quebec is attacked by gunmen  (Read 21056 times)

as a muslim I can confirm to you that people shouting 'allah akbar' is almost identical to shouting 'oh my god!'

if you watch those videos of bombs going off in the middle east you can usually hear the filmer saying 'allah akbar.' 99% of the time the filmer is a civilian and is saying that as an exclamation to the horror they are wtnessing

Yeah they shout it as a rallying cry before being bombed, they also shout it while attacking people. It's their version of Deus vult (that isn't inshallah)

yeah it has both meanings. in this case either the totally white shooter who converted to islam shouted it or someone who just witnessed their friend get shot in the back yelled it.

it doesn't translate well from english, but it holds the literal meaning of 'god is great.' however the context could either mean 'god give me power' or 'god save us'. given the fact that it was a mosque filled with muslim people, it was definitely the latter

he's like that one friend that always turns to you and says 'did i ever tell you about that time when....'

tony's so dumb that he couldn't process anything in the title past "mosque"

i dunno how relevant it is to shout "religion of peace" when they're the ones getting shot :y

they're so peaceful they won't even fight back

The correlation is that with nationalism if you think your country is the best then you think other countries are inferior, different countries generally have different cultures so you think other cultures are inferior, etc.
you can convert, but the idea is still "we were born into this religion, therefore we are superior" which is the basic idea behind nationalism. afaik if this is the case, they'll either accept converts or go more superficial and judge by race or something
the base idea of nationalism is to protect your people/culture, borders, etc. and maybe occasionally help out others when we can (like for example if a major natural disaster happens or something along those lines) and try not to cause more problems during hard times

you can be a nationalist and still hold a respect for other cultures while wishing to uphold the preservation of your own

the base idea of nationalism is that your country is better than all others. like thats literally in the definition im p sure

you just described nationalism on paper. Unfortunately, what you described rarely exists in real life. An example of wanting what's best for your country is if there was a disease ravaging the population and you were to insist that we help ourselves before others. However, we live in a time where the country is not experiencing any major problems. Any problems that do exist, i.e. Flint michigan's water crCIA, detroit's education crCIA, etc. are not being addressed currently, while problems that involve foreign events, such as syrian refugees, immigration, and israel are being blown completely out of proportion by news, media, and even the president.

problem is that "preservation of your own" leads to persecution of others. whether that's by stopping the evil jews or the evil muslims.

Nationalism is a horrible and abusive concept that expresses superiority rather than self-preservation. It's nearly impossible for someone to have nationalistic views and at the same time respect other cultures. It's a complete conflict of interest, to say 'im better than everyone else' and 'I'm just as good as everyone else' in the same sentence.
