Violent protests erupted at UC Berkeley on Wednesday night hours before right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak.

Black-clad protesters could be seen throwing fireworks at police and at the student union center on the Berkeley campus where the Breitbart editor's event was to be held. They were also seen tearing down metal barriers, smashing windows of the student center and setting a fire outside the building.

The university estimated that more than 1,500 protesters were gathered outside the student center. At least one person was injured, according to the university, although it was not immediately clear whether the individual was a protester, staff member or a bystander.

Administrators decided to cancel the event about two hours before Yiannopoulos' speech. UC Berkeley said it removed him from campus "amid the violence and destruction of property and out of concern for public safety."

i apologize for living under a rock but who is milo yiannopoulos?

openly gay republican rabble-rouser who talks really loudly and has gained a rather outspokenly hostile cult following

heh heh, they destroyed the local starbucks.

XD

for the record, what Milo said about Bucknell shaming it's biggest donor for voting Annoying Orange is true
I've seen it with my own eyes

and for those of you who think that's kind of a trivial thing to be reported on, know that President Bravman will send out an email to all of us immediately decrying "swastikas carved into public bathroom stalls" and "anti-Islamic posters being hung around the campus"
but not this
he didn't even have anything to say about it, even after sending us an email the night of the election urging Bucknellians that "we must reaffirm our commitment to engaging with one another based on a foundation of mutual respect and genuine community. Absent that, our mission cannot be fulfilled."

he's held up as one of the figureheads of the alt-right despite his admittance that he does not identify with them, nor with the Republican party

Pretty much this.

I may have a more left-wing view on politics, but this stuff grinds my gears.  Not because it make me look bad by association, but because I honestly expected more out of the American people.  The dignity of American higher education is dead when vulgar things like this happen.
