Imagine if every cell in your body was 'responsible for itself'
Society literally can't function properly if it's everybody for itself. You'll have more competition, less workers, less happiness. You're asking for anarchy, in which society will forget itself over, split into sub-groups, war with each other and eventually form a collective government again.
