Because a visible gun makes people nervous and nervous people do stupid things. Plus it's a liability for the officer as he risks being attacked or challenged because he has the gun.

I agree, anyone who believes in religious values is a dangerous and socially vulnerable individual. Get enough people who will haplessly believe whatever you tell them so long as it's delivered as word of god, and you'll be able to use it as a political vehicle to gain power and territory.
