Author Topic: Right ear ringing after shooting shotgun  (Read 11041 times)

I've shot a shotgun without ear protection or shoulder protection. Never hurt myself, nor had the ringing.
well that's because texans have evolved to withstand the forces involved in shooting guns

It can take 3 weeks for the ringing to go away, so you shouldn't worry about it too much. For the record, you have most likely permanently damaged your hearing. Hearing damage can occur at 85 db, and an average 12 gauge round can be around 156 db. One blast isn't going to deafen you, but it adds up, so be more careful in the future.
I shot it about 40 times, but like I said its back to the usual hearing volume and its just a slight ring when its extreamly quiet

Yikes, I thought you shot it once. You definitely have some level of irreversible hearing loss now.

welcome to the tinnitus club, im pretty sure everyone has it to some degree

its only noticeable if you're thinking about it, kind of like blinking and breathing

What are you talking about?

The ringing is caused by when the tips of the sound-detecting hairs in your ear break off and don't rebuild themselves. Sometimes this is the first time you damage them, sometimes it's after like 10 years.

If you keep firing guns without ear protection, you'll probably get it eventually.

This is the same as doing a science experiment without the protection and then posting a thread that your eyes hurt like hell

haha what the forget
like did it not hurt at the time or what lol

Just got back from the range. Fired 500 3.5" 12 gauge shells with my hearing aid on max and a bunch of broken glass between the stock and my shoulder. Didn't even hurt. The only ringing I hear is of the liberty bell. Get on my level.

do you know how loving much i want true silence and will never get it

like i get pissed thinking about the fact that my tinnitus will never let me hear it (nothing)
silence pisses me the forget off

usually people naturally fill in silence with some form of white noise when it's not there naturally. not chronocally like tinnitus but its a relatively common phenomenon

That happened a lot when I was a kid

A good example is how I refuse to sleep at night without a fan running, even if I don't need it to cool off.

I always have my cieling fan on. it gets too hot if it's off first of all
don't think noise is really a concern though. if I can't hear cars I can hear bugs or the wind

In my house, I either hear my dogs moving around or snoring when there is no sound. Silence makes me go insane, which is why I fiddle alot during school test.
