Author Topic: difficult games to play?  (Read 9224 times)

I hate causalities, because I'm conditioned to where it tells me there was something I could've done to prevent it.
i restarted a game every time i lost more than 3 of my guys
ive never even come close to beating the game

What's even worse is it's always my higher ranking dudes and not the loving squaddies who can't hit the broadside of a barn.

quake 3 arena
the one first person shooter that doesnt have little kids playing it and doesnt have any unbalanced DLC garbage, while it may be old as forget and barely anyone plays it anymore it makes for a good challenge because its just a straight up game of you vs. your enemies and if you dont get the hang of things nothing will save you - you will die over and over until you learn how to be the best.
also i havent tried unreal tournament 1999 but i heard that was also a good fps from way back when

in firaxis xcom, 50% is a crap shot you never ever take unless you have to.
in ancient, OG xcom, 50% is a magical shot that you always take because aiming is really hard and none of my soldiers learned how to do it.

Terraria with a Hardcore character

...on expert mode.
Expert's already very hard for me
I've also died, many, many times.

Super Mario Bros.

No warp zone, no TAS, no fireballs. Or no mushrooms at all if you're feeling up to it.

Dark Souls-like games are only artificially difficult. The games are large non-punishing tutorials, aside from Demons' Souls, which increases the difficulty of the area you die in. The enemies throw high damage attacks that give you no indication to how the attack will behave. You die, but you now know how that enemy's attacks work. And then you go and pick up the souls/blood/salt/chips you lost from dying, which removes the punishment altogether, and then you kill it.
I don't think you understand the phrase "artificial difficulty"

witcher 3 on death march
dying light on nightmare
blockland with the crosshair off

real talk a lot of dark souls / bloodborne is artificial difficulty

most enemies do insane amounts of damage (e.g. those ghoul things with sickles at the start of the ringed city), are hidden behind walls, have bologna camera tracking, or straight up have one-hit kill moves that only work once because you'll never get hit by them more than once

tbh most from software games have artificial difficulty

see: armored core last raven, the great chapel hunter in bloodborne not eileen, loran darkbeast, nameless king, smelter demon, king vendrick

ot:
gaiares and vectorman 2

damage is no problem at all if you're actually able to roll and not get greedy with hits. Same thing happened to me with those guys, tried to tank hits thinking they were easy. When I came back after I died I picked em out 1 by 1 and got through them easily. If you get forgeted by enemies hidden behind walls it's your fault for rushing through. You need to have a sense of awareness, granted not as much as DS1 with Sen's fortress for example, but still. And after high wall of lothric and the puny hollows that do that you should be prepared. The enemies that do large amounts of damage are either fat and slow, and have an attack that locks them in a direction (ex: the big fat harald dudes) or the angels which are stuck in one place, with the game giving you plenty of cover to get by. I do agree camera tracking is an issue though.
