update: apparently comcast has been filing fake comments in support of the measure using some of its customers' information? if this is true that's incredibly, absurdly scummy and the fact that they're suing to try and cover it up makes it even worse. hopefully it's not true?

so someone give me the lowdown of what this means and what effect it's going to have on consumers

ISPs will have the legal ability to prioritize or throttle certain traffic. this can be used to create arbitrary 'fast lanes' and 'slow lanes,' which can stifle competition and impose restrictions on how consumers are able to use their internet service. similar to if your power or water company forced you to pay extra to use a panasonic TV or fill a bucket with water

whether or not ISPs will abuse this is uncertain, but providers like comcast have already indicated that they can and will

societal elites in america dont face repurcussions for their actions, if you havent noticed

*lists politicians assassinated for their actions*

woops

yeah FCC regulations are laws, dummy. the FCC may do some stupid stuff like censor radio but they're also the reason you can listen to a radio station at all

also I don't know what the hell you mean by those quotation marks but whatever it is there's a 90% chance you're wrong about it

"enforcing" neutrality just sounded weird to me
I don't know why you think I'm against it because of that

and I say the FCC needs to go because not only does the bad outweigh the good with them (as clearly evidenced by the fact that they want to overturn net neutrality) but because they are basically useless these days

if you take in the facts that the FCC is an unelected body that shuts down comedians for their jokes and changes its mind on important issues on a whim it kinda overstates their accomplishments in technologically unifying the market for the communicative intellige-- you get what I mean

the idea that the telecommunications sector couldn't run itself now without the government's help, after all these years of doing it swimmingly, makes no sense to me

comcast should forget off and die tbh

the FCC has been enforcing net neutrality since the obama administration, the republican party has been trying to undo this ever since and the guy that Annoying Orange put in as chairman finally put the reversal into motion. letting telecom run completely privately is a terrible idea, that would absolutely guarantee the destruction of net neutrality and all manner of abuse for businesses and consumers alike who all depend on internet, telephone, etc. for function. telecom is a major backbone of modern society and that's an immense amount of economic power to entrust to the private sector completely unchecked.

and i'd contend you don't want them to be elected because you don't want politicians looking for reelection every cycle in these chairs. you want people who are damn good at what they do and who know the industry well and know what's best for both telecom firms and consumers. if you put the seats up for national election, you get people who just want to play the political system to protect their jobs above all else. that's why the president appoints judges and executive positions, because we don't want these positions to be political. and for the longest time, they haven't been
