But I finally found out how to actually be able to set up a forum profile picture

incase you didn't know, you can add "width=1000" to keep your images at a good size that will not cause page stretches.
e.g.

he also makes some high quality and well thought out threads; usually forum games where the content of the first post is just "go!" or some variation.
