Why not start with the tutorial? It teaches you what you need to know about the game in action.
Click on "Start a Game" on the main menu, then choose "Tutorial" in the gamemode list that appears and click "Select" at the bottom right. On the next screen select "Single Player" and click "Launch Game" at the bottom right. Now the tutorial will start!
