Unpopular opinion: people are treating military service as a privilege rather than a duty. If there's something you could be doing that would better serve your country, then you should not join the armed forces. If you're statistically likely to bring down unit cohesion, then you should not join the armed forces.

This is my take on the situation

To me, Transgenders should be allowed to serve in the military.
HOWEVER
They should not be treated any differently than regular members of the military. They should be able to act in a professional, dignified manner and be able to put aside their personal issues to do their duty in the military in a professional manner. If they need HRT or Gender Reassignment Surgery, they should get that stuff done before they enter.
In the end, Transgender or Not, they should be able to perform to peak capacity as soldiers because loveual orientation is irrelevant when it comes to serving in combat operations

This is just my opinion though. In the grand scheme of things, I'll defer to the presidents judgement on this.

Isn't that the real goal, in the end? To just be treated like any other person. I mean, that's what I would expect too.

No it does not. HRT costs on average about $60/month or less, and that's assuming they have even decided to transition at all. That's less than the expense for someone with severe allergies who needs an epi-pen (which costs $600, each). Does it make sense to ban people from combat because they have bad allergies? How about people with HIV who need constant, expensive treatment but are otherwise perfectly functional?

as a person with a severe peanut allergy, if you do a good job at keeping away from what starts your allergies, you'll only need a refill on epi-pens annually, and if you actually care about staying safe you'll only need one injector and you'll have it on you at all times
that means if you aren't a bumbling idiot covering allergies is way cheaper than covering the illnesses transgenders have, never mind that CIA isn't going to start lobbing peanuts and beehives at people so in a combat sense mental illnesses are way more dangerous

The medical cost argument does not work here. Trans people cost a negligible amount, and a huge number of much more expensive conditions are apparently perfectly fine to have when you're in the military.

you didn't name any conditions but I'm pretty sure you get discharged from the military if you have PTSD (which is pretty close in terms of Self Delete rate to what transgenders experience)

When I was touring an army base while visiting a friend a decorated soldier told me tales of how guys would swap stories of the highest security places they jacked off and didn't get caught.
