I'm installing Maya, I'll take a look.

As far as I know maya is practically the industry standard. Thats what they teach in every graphics arts course in college I've seen

it is. however autodesk recognizes maya sucks for modeling (but absolutely god tier for animation) so they acquired 3dsmax and made it so that it integrates very well with maya

its not impossible to model in maya, but there are some odd limitations and difficulties with manipulating vertices, esp with orthogonal views. for example its not easy to just add a vertice to an edge, and generally flatshading is never used (and rather small beveled edges)

You should had told me that before lol, so it's good to have both programs? 3DS for modelling and Maya for animation.

you can work entirely in maya, the transition from maya to 3dsmax is far, far easier than from blender to maya or 3dsmax. i dont think that not having experience in 3dsmax would hurt your chances at getting hired at a modeling firm, but not having maya would almost certainly.

other things you may want to check out is zbrush, and maybe the facebook group 10,000 hours (a modeling community with varying degrees of talent and industry pros). they can give you far better pointers than most people here can (exception would be puppydog who actually does industry models). what i know here comes from that group

Autodesk maya.
i got more used to it than the other ones. proven to be a good 3d program

blender is super reliable

blender is super reliable

Not really. It crashes way more then it should. You practically have to rig it up to autosave every 10 minutes

what kind of toaster do you use blender on jesus
its like twice as lightweight than maya

well, by reliable I mean free. plus, you might want to check on your installation or something lol

prepare to die
sorry babe but sketchup is the tool of the future

why not get a 2DS? they're cheaper

No it crashes without warning. The 10 minute rig up is so that you won't lose an hour of work

Well yeah if you can't afford Maya or max by all means blender is fine
