it is. however autodesk recognizes maya sucks for modeling (but absolutely god tier for animation) so they acquired 3dsmax and made it so that it integrates very well with maya
its not impossible to model in maya, but there are some odd limitations and difficulties with manipulating vertices, esp with orthogonal views. for example its not easy to just add a vertice to an edge, and generally flatshading is never used (and rather small beveled edges)
