He was drunk.

doesnt matter. if the police arrest u against killing a guy, unless there' like evidence of him threatening you, you're gonna go to jail for murder

op are there security cameras in the halls

no i made sure of that

Maybe, I live in a stand-your-ground state and he was threatening to hurt me.
Threatening to hurt someone isn't legally hurting anyone. If you had tried to shoot him he could actually shoot back, since he would be using self defense. Loading your gun was definitely a smart choice, you know, just in case he enters your own house or actually tries to attack you, but given the current situation, you're very lucky you didn't shoot him, because not only could you have gotten killed by him, but he could've been acquitted of any murder charges too

This. You sorta escalated the situation. If he was there in search of drugs, or carrying drugs, or was actually drunk (you say he drunkardly walked down the hall), and didn't live there, he'd either forget off or get carted off when the police arrived. He's on what I presume is private property late at night yeah? Why do all the gun loading and stuff talking, putting yourself in danger, when you could call the cops and chill safely??

There would have never been a chance for him to pull a weapon on you if you simply didn't engage with the drunk fool. He basically pulled you down to his level of idiocy.
In the OP I stated that he buzzed my apartment. I later checked the halls because there was a lot of noise coming out of there, it's 10 at night. I'm not gonna just call the cops right off the bat. My initial intentions were to make sure things were cool, not get into a pissing match with some drunk idiot. I loaded my rifle but kept it hidden in my apartment so he wouldn't see it. It was for my protection as well as my mother's.
This isn't some internet argument you can apply levels of stooping too, this was a real-life situation where violence could've occurred. If this occurred anywhere else, it's not my business, but you're near my home and acting like a fool.

In hind-sight, if I kept him talking while the police were on their way, they could've nabbed him in the first place.

No.

For some perspective, I live in a small town that's deeply affected by by drug-smuggling. Mostly meth, weed, and ecstasy. Every other month there's a bust involving one of them. Most violence in the town revolves around people getting drunk. Very recently too, there's been a few kidnappings, all resulting in the victim found dead.

I suppose so. Again, bravado getting the better of me, and nerves alike.

except it didn't and shooting him wouldn't be justified unless there was any said violence

my last encounter with a drunk person was like 3 hours ago, and it ended with us hugging because he broke down in tears about how he has testicular cancer. weird world

what the forget are you people drinking

you escalated the situation and then asked us if you should've murdered the dude. what the forget? you should just ask him if he's okay and once he wont leave call the cops and let them throw him out.

idk but this drunk dude was drinking some heavy stuff. when i found him he almost stumbled into traffic

I didn't ask stuff. If escalating the situation is asking him who or what he's looking for then we live in a forgeted world don't we? Where the forget are you guys getting this "you escalated the situation" part from?

you went out and argued with this crazy dude in the hallway. the dude was probably 1. high 2. violent or 3. both. you would not win the fight if he stabbed you. it's not macho to get killed. you also put yourself and your mother in danger by pissing off a crazy drug addict who knows where you live. that's handicapped. you wouldn't have been in any danger if you just went back inside after he said he was looking for drugs and called the cops when he started making noise.

if you think someone is dangerous or violent, don't try talking to them, just call the police.

First of all, you didn't even read the loving OP or anything afterwards, and now you're arguing with me. Good job. Let me reiterate what I said in the OP and onward to help you out.

My door got buzzed, go to see who it is. No response. Go out to hallway after hearing ruckus, see drunk guy bouncing off the walls and knocking constantly on neighbors door. Is clearly in the neighborhood for drugs after asking him what's up. Why should I care if he wants drugs? Good for you, but do it somewhere else for your own good (most people loving leave when they know they've been ratted.)
Go back to my game, but load my gun just in case, people are stupid (see this is the part you missed.)
Go back out because he's still being obnoxious and loud, tell him to essentially get lost, but in a nice way, along the lines of "If you shouldn't be here, get going; I've never seen you here before."
He takes it personally and starts threatening me. Queue the part where he looks like he may have a weapon. Queue calling the cops. He goes on with the shtick of threatening me, then scatters.

If he feels like coming back to my apartment I won't hesitate this time to actually loving shoot him.

okay... yea... that's exactly what I thought you did? and it was still stupid and reckless.

If he feels like coming back to my apartment I won't hesitate this time to actually loving shoot him.
then have fun in prison lol. you can't just shoot people because they seem dangerous.

jesus, people like you shouldn't be allowed to own firearms. you clearly lack the sense and maturity needed to own a lethal weapon.
